Press Conference with GUSTAVO KUERTEN
Kuerten vs. Davydenko 7:5, 6:0 14.05.2003
Q: It was a bit of a slow start for you today.
A: Yes, a little bit. I played. It was the first match in the morning and I
didn't start playing the best tennis. But, for me it was good to have this
fighting back and have the feeling to even when not having the lead be able
to keep playing my game. It's good for me to believe again that I felt my
game. As far as I felt that I was playing my game well, I knew I have a
chance. That's the goal for me, the things I have to put into my mind and
what I have to believe in. This is what happened today. That's the big thing
for me to reach this week.
Q: Once you got on top, you got completely on top.
A: Yes, like I said. I have to start to believe in this again. I have to keep
playing my game, like today. I know I have a good chance that I can compete
everybody. So, I have to raise this confidence and this belief in my mind.
And today it worked fine. I have to keep on doing the same as the next match
goes on.
Q: What was it you did? That you kept hitting the ball without holding back?
Is that what you mean?
A: In the beginning when I was down, I kept playing aggressive when I needed
it and took my time when I needed it and rallied. And I tried to put the
pressure on the guy too. From the beginning, I was just looking for feeling
my game, choosing the right shots. That's the key for my game. Everything has
to be clear and confident in my head and that's what happened from the first
to the second set. I really need this and have to maintain this for the other
matches. It's going to be another breakthrough if I can do it.
Q: You need it for what, for confidence?
A: Yes, for myself, for winning, for confidence. To be more happy, satisfied
with my game, myself. This brings everything together. It's good for the
competition, it makes you feel good. Right now, I want to go back to the
court. It's a good feeling to have for yourself. Everything seems easy and
you can enjoy a little bit more.
Q: A lot of the other players say that it's heavy conditions here. Does that
give you any problem or worry about injury and secondly does it give you a
problem, because it is so different from the French Open?
A: No, I think, the clay depends a lot on the weather. It's raining here.
Once in a tournament there a different situations and you've got to be
prepared for everything that comes. Especially this week here, the courts
are pretty slow. Normally Hamburg brings this kinds of weather and these
conditions. I think you just have to play with the conditions and know what
you are going to face. Of course, if you have more and more weapons in your
game you can be more successful in different conditions. That's what clay
brings most of the time.
