No. 2 seed David Nalbandian was one of several Argentines to advance at the
Copa AT&T.
Argentina's David Nalbandian advanced to the second round of the Copa AT&T
with a straightforward 6-3, 7-5 win over Fernando Vicente of Spain in
Monday's featured evening match. Nalbandian, seeded No. 2 in Buenos
Aires, continues to prove he's a versatile player on all surfaces.
The 21-year-old from Cordoba reached the quarterfinals at this year's
Australian Open, losing to eventual finalist Rainer Schuettler. He now
stands in the No. 12 spot of the ATP Champions Race 2003, with a chance
to dart up into the Leaderboard with a strong showing here in his home country.
Overall, Monday was a successful showing for the Argentine contingency.
Some 3,000 spectators showed up to see Argentine veteran Franco Squillari
advance over Brazilian Andre Sa in three sets. Another Argentine Mariano
Zabaleta also defeated Attila Savolt of Hungary 6-3, 6-4, while wild card
Edgardo Massa surprised Spain's Alberto Martin 6-4, 6-4. In the late night
match, No. 8 seed Guillermo Coria, also from Argentina, defeated countryman
Jose Acasuso, the 2001 finalist here, in three sets.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Squillari: "I hope it's the beginning of something important. I stepped on
court somewhat sleepy, but I hope it's not like that next time. I feel
motivated to win tournaments. As players, we always step on court to win.
Each match is a different story, and logic doesn't exist in tennis"
Zabaleta. "I served well. I've been practicing for three weeks for this
tournament. It was difficult to play today because of the strong wind.
Matches in these conditions are very difficult. But I liked the way I
resolved the important moments in the match and dominated from beginning
to end."
Kuerten: "After a very difficult 2002, in which I was injured, I'm having
good results and I'm happy because of it. My goal this week is to win two
or three matches and to keep my rhythym."
About playing Marcelo Rios in the first round:
"It's difficult because Rios just played in the final at Vina del Mar and
he's a very experienced player. It will be a real test for me. It's not
common for two former No. 1 playears to play in the first round."
About his goals for 2003:
"My goal is to finish in the Top 10. I'm starting to find my level of game"
About playing in Argentina:
"It's close to Brazil, and I've always felt comfortable here. The people
here treat me with a lot of respect, and they make me feel very proud of
myself."
TUESDAY PREVIEW
Gustavo Kuerten has one of the most difficult first-round matches of all
the seeded players at this year's Copa AT&T. The No. 6 seeded Brazilian
faces the unseeded Marcelo Rios, who just reached the final in Vina del
Mar (l to Sanchez) and has 18 career singles titles. Kuerten, a wild card
entrant, has already won an event this year, in Auckland, and has hoisted
the champion's trophy here in Buenos Aires in 2001. The two standout South
Americans have played four times in their illustrious careers, with
each winning two matches. However, Rios and Kuerten have not played since
Monte Carlo in 1999.
Top seed Carlos Moya, the 1995 champion in Buenos Aires, also will be in
action Tuesday, taking on fellow Spaniard David Ferrer. After a superb 2002
season, in which he secured four titles, Moya is a prime contender to claim
his 12th career title in Buenos Aires. He defeated Ferrer the only time they
previously met, last year in Umag on clay.
Rising Chilean star Fernando Gonzalez, the No. 3 seed, also has a tricky
first-round match against David Sanchez, who just claimed his first ATP
title in Vina del Mar. Not only is Sanchez coming off his biggest career
victory, but he heads into Tuesday's match with the fiery Gonzalez with a
2-0 series lead.
Other seeds set for play on Tuesday include South American stars, No. 4
seed Gaston Gaudio of Argentina, countryman Juan Ignacio Chela, seeded
No. 5, and the No. 7 seed Nicolas Lapentti.
