Kuerten Starts Strong
Gustavo "Guga" Kuerten upset No. 4 seed Olivier Rochus 6-2, 6-4 to advance to
the second round of the III Open Comunidad Valenciana de Tenis in Valencia.
It was Kuerten's first match in more than six months since losing in the
first round of the US Open last year.
" I still have a long way to go, I feel really good and I think it will be
possible. My game is really going to improve. I don't really think about it.
I have changed a few techniques to see if I feel better on the court."
Kuerten said.
"I think my definitive physical recuperation will not be happen from one day
to the next. I felt really well a couple of months after my operation and
this makes me think positively."
No. 2 seed Fernando Gonzalez also advanced with a 6-3, 7-6(3) win over Bjorn
Phau from Germany. The hard-hitting Chilean did not seem comfortable with the
serve as he was broken two times while hitting 59% of first serves.
It is Gonzalez' first appearance in Valencia as he chases the second title
this season after claiming Auckland early in the year and losing the final in
Vina del Mar (l. to Gaudio). The Chilean will now face the winner of
Spaniards Felix Mantilla and Oscar Hernandez.
