Kuerten Stops Federer Streak
Gustavo Kuerten produced his best win of the 2003 season against
Roger Federer at the Pacific Life Open Wednesday but quickly downplayed
his chances of going on to win the title. After losing in the first round
of his past four Tennis Masters Series events, the former world No.1 is
delighted to be in the last 16 at Indian Wells. But Kuerten, who underwent
hip surgery little more than one year ago, remains unsure if he can go all
the way to the title.
"It's like I'm coming from outside. I'm trying to find my way back again
hopefully to the Top 10," Kuerten said. "It's much longer than a year since
I've won a Masters Series tournament (Cincinnati, 2001). So it's different.
I'm not used anymore to going that far, to win those important matches.
So I think still I cannot be considered one of the favorite players
[to win the title]. But I'm one of the guys who's more hungry to win matches,
trying to break through."
Kuerten saved two set points en route to beating Federer - who had won
16 of his past 17 matches - 7-5, 7-6(3). Kuerten now plays the winner of
Tim Henman and Agustin Calleri.
Federer, the tournament champion in Marseille and Dubai who stands
third in the ATP Champions Race, said: "He definitely played really
aggressively in the beginning of the match - he surprised me a little bit.
I didn't feel well in the beginning. I had to look for my rhythm.
I didn't feel like I was serving too well today. That didn't give me any
free points. In the second set I missed too many chances. It's obvious.
It's disappointing to lose a match like this because it's a match I could
have won."
