Nalbandian's family under surveillance
Tennis star David Nalbandian is the latest sports personality from Argentina to fall victim to potential rackets with police keeping a close watch on his family in case of an attempted kidnap.
Police in the central province of Cordoba confirmed they are keeping the player's parents under close surveillance after receiving a threat they would be kidnapped.
"We've taken this preventative step after receiving threats saying the family of Nalbandian could be targeted by kidnappers," police chief Pablo Nieto told local radio station Cadena 3.
Nieto added that the threat included the date of the intended kidnap attempt.
Nalbandian, 21, was in Montreal where he lost in the final of the Masters Series to American Andy Roddick.
His father Norberto Nalbandian affirmed the police presence but said he was trying to "live as normal a family life as possible".
The kidnapping of sports personalities or of their close family members has become commonplace in Argentina in recent years - mainly due to the economic crisis which has plagued the South American country.
Recent cases have included the daughter of former Argentine golf champion Roberto de Vicenzo, who was released after a ransom was paid.
Argentine rugby player Federico Virasoro also endured 10 days with his kidnappers before being released.
The most targeted however remain football stars - German Zapata, the younger brother of River Plate's Victor Zapata, spent the New Year in the hands of his captors.
In April 2002 the brother of Barcelona's Juan Roman Riquelme was released after spending 30 hours away from home. He was released after a ransom $US160,000 ($A245,850) was paid.
