Alanis, Tori Kick Off Tour
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Teaming for a
five-week tour that will crisscross the
U.S., alt-rock darlings Alanis Morissette and Tori
Amos unveiled their MP3.com-sponsored
double bill Wednesday night to mixed reactions.

With both women performing long and winding
sets, it's an evening for only the most devoted
fans. The night is further drawn-out by an opening
act in this case folk-singer Greta Gaines 霊one of several unknowns who won a contest
sponsored by the tour.

For Morissette's fans, there's a mixed bag
onstage: saucy hits like 1995's "You Oughta
Know" from her massive 28-million-seller, Jagged
Little Pill, alongside newer, less-accessible
songs from her current CD, Supposed Former
Infatuation Junkie.

Dressed in Far Eastern silks as was the stage
Morissette pranced aimlessly, stomping
stage-right and left in time to the less-tuneful
meanderings that now comprise her sound. Even
the most charismatic star would have trouble
selling shrill tracks like "Baba," one of several
that sent fans racing to the snack bars.

It wasn't until she blew into her harmonica for the
first familiar notes of "Hand in My Pocket" that
the show finally came alive. The plaintive "You
Learn" also elicited big cheers.

Of course long before she commandeered the
U.S. airwaves with Pill's visceral tones,
Morissette was a Canadian pop starlet, children's
television personality, and a regular victim of
Nickelodeon's green slime machine. Now, nearly
five years into to her adult career, she's clearly at
a crossroads: reconciling the conventional
song-and-dance training of her youth with the
liberating statements she prefers to make as a
"serious" grownup artist. It remains unclear
whether Morissette wants to be a radio-friendly
heroine or spiritual guru.

Amos knows exactly what she is: a proud
art-rocker whose sexy posturing and bass-heavy
piano hide the flaws in her barely hummable
repertoire. (It's no wonder she has never cracked
the Top 40 despite a rabid cult following going on
eight years).

At her best on jazzy romps such as "Cornflake

Amos is a hard-working performer who demands
her fans work and think right along with her a
chore for the uninitiated, but rewarding for those
who connect. To her credit, Amos makes sure
such loyalty is acknowledged. Hours before the
show she amicably held court on one of the
National Center arena's outdoor patios, signing
autographs and chatting up the issues with all
who stopped by to visit a rare move for a star
at any level.

onstage stark songs about stark subjects 霊was lost amid her muddy sound mix.

itself, a cavern of exposed concrete more than
half empty with fewer than 8,000 fans in
