THE RIGHTEOUS READER
your hide-and-seek guide to the lite-brite world of ani difranco
brought to you by the action-hair barbies at righteous babe records
fun & games issue * june 1999
It's the first completely new issue of the Reader since the super-skimpy one
last February, and to celebrate, we're gonna ramble on and on and on and on,
like this:
I SPY SOMETHING RIGHTEOUS (press, tv, radio, movie, and internet sightings)
*Barring more late-breaking news, the long-awaited, oft-postponed "CNN
Newsstand: Entertainment Weekly" profile of Ani and Righteous Babe should air
on CNN on Thursday, June 10 at 8 PM EST.
*An archive of Ani's hour-long interview on National Public Radio's "Talk of
the Nation" call-in show from last April can be found at
<http://programs.npr.org/npr2/PrgDisp.cfm?PrgDate=04/19/99&PrgID=5>
*Two new in-depth interviews of note: Guitar Player (June 1999) and Tape Op
(Spring 1999). Good stuff you haven't seen anywhere else. Also worth tracking
down is
*House of Blues did a cybercast of Ani's New Orleans show from the spring tour
on June 2, 1999. Surf over to <www.hob.com> or <www.livemusic.com> to find an
archive of the show in a few weeks.
RED ROVER, RED ROVER, LET THE NEW RELEASES COME OVER
*Up up up first, of course, is FELLOW WORKERS, collaboration #2 from Ani D. and
storyteller Utah Phillips, hot off the presses (or whatever) with seditious
songs and incendiary stories from the golden age of anarchy. Ani's current
touring band (Jason Mercer, Julie Wolf, and Daren Hahn) are all on hand, along
with surprise guest trumpeter (!) Dave Pirner -- and don't miss the liner notes
by Howard Zinn, author of A PEOPLE'S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES. Check out
Scott Alarik's article in the Boston Globe (May 16, 1999): "'Fellow Workers'
offers tantalizing glimpses at the people who fought to establish labor unions
in America, epic heroes like Mother Jones and Joe Hill, along with the
lesser-known loggers and miners Phillips has culled his stories from over the
years. As before, DiFranco frames his songs and tales in exquisite musical
settings, adding jazzy smoke and mystery to the mythic moods he sets."

*This fall, watch for as-yet-untitled new albums on RBR from bossa-noise-pop
maestro ARTO LINDSAY and jazz-hop politi-poet SEKOU SUNDIATA-our first two
releases with zero Ani content, though she hand-picked 'em both. It's a bold
new move for us, and you can be sure we'll tell ya all about both discs later
on down the line.
SHE SHOOTS, SHE SCORES
*Ani's 1997 double album LIVING IN CLIP was singled out as one of the
"Essential Recordings of the '90s" in the May 13 issue of Rolling Stone. See
the full list at
http://www.rollingstone.com/aolny/rs90s/rs90s0.html
WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE (collectibles for completists ... & everyone else)
*GIRLS LIKE US: 40 EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN CELEBRATE GIRLHOOD IN STORY, POETRY, AND
SONG (edited by Gina Misiroglu, New World Library, 1999) is a new anthology
which reprints the lyrics to "Not A Pretty Girl" alongside material from the
likes of bell hooks, Isabel Allende, Angela Davis, Alice Walker, and three
dozen other rrrighteous babes.
*FISH TREE WATER BLUES (Bullseye Blues & Jazz, 1999) is a CD benefiting
Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund; it contains the album version of "Fuel" plus a
killer gospelized Eagles cover by Etta James, tracks by Mavis Staples, Ruth
Brown, and 10 more bluesy types, as well as fact-packed multimedia content on
environmental activism.
WATCH YOUR MOUTH! IT'S THE F-WORD TOUR, FEATURING
MISTRESS OF FOLK ANI DIFRANCO AND MASTER OF FUNK MACEO PARKER,
COMING TO AN AMPITHEATRE NEAR YOU THIS SUMMER
PIN THE T-SHIRT ON THE DONKEY (a quick little merch update)
Pardon the atypically crass marketing pitch, but those of you who haven't heard
from us since the last "catalog o' stuff" went out last winter will be happy to
learn that a few of the items we've been promising for months finally exist in
the real world now, namely:
*the long-awaited LITTLE PLASTIC REMIXES, RBR's first foray into 12-inch vinyl
-- 4 brand-new alternate versions of classic Ani toonz
*the 6UP t-shirt, featuring lines from the title song of Ani's latest album
*the LITTLE PLASTIC SONGBOOK, featuring the music to all the tracks on the
LITTLE PLASTIC CASTLE album (actually this still doesn't exist, but it's coming
any day now, we're told--look for it in music stores everywhere, or order it
from us)
*and here's one we haven't been promising for months: a swell new poster of Ani
and Utah, with a big honkin' slab o' philosophizin' from FELLOW WORKERS
Please note that we're still not set up to handle orders (or inquiries about
orders) online, but the affable folks at 1-800-ON-HER-OWN will be happy to meet
all your needs (except those best handled by a physician, therapist,
significant other, or gym teacher). If you don't have a catalog yet, just call
them -- or send an e-mail request to <RBRinfo@aol.com>.
That's it for now. See you on the courts, by the pool, or in the shower. (Gotta
run-fresh out of sports metaphors...)
