Ani DiFranco Readies Woody Guthrie Tribute LP
Over thirty years after his death, folksinger and American legend
Woody Guthrie's legacy lives on, this time thanks to Ani DiFranco.
An album documenting a Guthrie tribute concert held by the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 will be released on DiFranco's
Righteous Babe label. DiFranco, a big Woody Guthrie fan,
performed at the concert along with the Indigo Girls, Dave Pirner of
Soul Asylum, and Bruce Springsteen, among others.
DiFranco isn't the only artist delivering an LP inspired by the
legendary folkie in the coming months. As we reported last
September, another LP of Guthrie songs will be arriving courtesy of
British protest-rocker Billy Bragg and Americana band Wilco (see
"Billy Bragg And Wilco To Release Second Album Of Guthrie
Songs").
Last year, Bragg and Wilco released "Mermaid Avenue," a
critically-lauded album of previously unreleased Guthrie lyrics set to
new music. The tracks for the new record will be taken from the
same sessions that produced "Mermaid Avenue," as a total of forty
songs were recorded and only fifteen released so far.
