Fiona show goes rotten in Big Apple
(InfoBeat) - Fiona Apple bounded onto the stage at New York's
Roseland Ballroom Tuesday night sporting a big smile and appeared
ready to provide the sold-out crowd with her passionate pop fare. But
instead of her usual introspective musings, her fans were treated to
a steady stream of tears and four-letter words. Her set began
innocently enough with "On The Bound," followed by the singer
pounding out an intense version of "To Your Love" at the piano, but
glitches in the venue's audio system cropped up soon after and
induced a meltdown of epic proportions. Apparently, the on-stage
audio malfunctions made it difficult for the singer to hear herself,
and she was not shy about letting the audience in on her disgust. The
remainder of the evening saw Apple serving up an expletive-filled
performance. Her attempts at "Criminal," "Limp," "Sullen Girl," among
others were peppered with screams, tears and swear words. At times,
her absolute disgust for the situation caused her to momentarily stop
singing and cradle her head in her hands. In between songs she
commented on how she was "thrilled" with the venue's sound system and
barked a few choice words at the press, threatening to "f***ing kill
them" if they unjustly critiqued her performance.
Apple's antics for the evening were not all rage-induced rantings.
She sincerely apologized to her fans numerous times for the situation
and seemed heartbroken that she was not providing a top notch
performance. Her intense fear that she was not singing up to par,
although understandable, proved to be futile. When she did actually
allow herself to sing, her deep, sultry growl sounded as strong as
ever. Most of the crowd stuck by her throughout, providing cheers of
encouragement throughout the show. Her fans' undying support proved
not enough to turn the performance around. Approximately 40 minutes
into her set and in the middle of "Carrion," while wiping tears from
her cheeks, she stated "the song was dead" and ordered her band to
stop playing. After consulting with someone backstage, she returned
to the mike and barely finished the track. She then announced she
would be taking a five minute break in hopes that the audio problem
could be fixed. However, after 20 minutes a spokesperson announced
she would not be returning, and that she would be back in New York in
the near future to provide the evening's ticket-holders with a "kick
ass" show.
