No Doubt about it, they're back

No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani has had more success
recently on collaborations with Moby (South Side) and Eve
(Let Me Blow Ya Mind) than her SoCal band did with their
previous album, 2000's Return Of Saturn.
The pop-ska group's fortunes should change with their
latest release, in stores Tuesday, which sees them embrace
dancehall -- the energetic fusion of reggae, ska and
calypso -- retro-rock, hip-hop, funk and electronica.
Helping diversify matters is an all-star cast of
producers, including The Neptunes, Nellee Hooper, William
Orbit, Ric Ocasek and Prince.
Highlights include the catchy and curious Detective,
produced by Hooper; the '80s techno number Hella Good,
courtesy of The Neptunes; the dancehall tracks Underneath
It All, co-written with the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart and
produced by Jamaican legends Sly & Robbie, and Start The
Fire, courtesy of dancehall vets Steely & Clevie; Ocasek's
jumpy, Cars-reminiscent Don't Let Me Down and Platinum
Blonde Life; and Prince's pulsating Waiting Room.
After Return Of Saturn's polished sound, courtesy of
producer Glenn Ballard, this 13-track album is definitely
a much more interesting listen.
So far there is no Toronto date for the group but they
are expected to tour next year. (More on: No Doubt).
