Natalie Imbruglia on Billy Corgan, Next Album
Pop thrush Natalie Imbruglia says that "Identify"
the dreamy, moody tune that Smashing Pumpkins
frontman Billy Corgan and David Bowie sideman
Mike Garson wrote for her to sing on the
Stigmata soundtrack 霠is a bit of a creative
vacation for her as she prepares to record her
sophomore album.
"It was fun to get back in the studio real quick
and do something that was not as much
pressure as my up-and-coming second album,"
says the 24-year-old Imbruglia, whose hit single
"Torn" remains as ubiquitous on pop radio
playlists now as when it was first released.
"'Identify' was fun because I got to be creative
and almost a little more experimental. I just hope
that the audience realizes that's what it is. I don't
think you can say it's reflective of my album or a
hint of things to come for me. But it's definitely a
step on and up, I would say, and a great honor
for me to get to work with Billy."
The Stigmata soundtrack is due out Aug. 24, at
which time Imbruglia expects to be hard at work
on her own album. She's already done some
songwriting sessions with collaborators, including
Dave Stewart, and she's "taken meetings" with
several other potential workmates. It's come
slowly, she says; "I've had a lot of blocks about it
'cause of the pressure that's on me to come up
with a really great album." But she says the
Stigmata project has not only gotten her back in
a creative mode but has also emboldened her to
consider new directions on the next album 霊although she doubts there will be many drastic
changes.
"I'm going to push boundaries," Imbruglia says,
"but at the same time I think it's important for
your fans that you don't make too much of a
turnaround 'cause they're used to hearing you a
certain way. If you come back too different, you
