Patti Smith Gets Anthologized
Arista has set a March 19 release date for the first
compilation set of Patti Smith's 27-year recording career.
"Land 1975-2002," a two-CD package, will include a "hits"
disc of material culled from her eight Arista albums and a
disc of unreleased and rare songs, including demos, live
tracks, and two new studio recordings. The compilation's
packaging will include a booklet with photos, original
lyrics and drawings, and liner notes written by author
Susan Sontag.
The track list for the set's first disc was chosen from
votes cast by fans on Smith's recent tours and via the
Internet. It will include classic '70s cuts such as
"Gloria," "Free Money," "Dancing Barefoot," and "Pissing
in a River" as well as latter-day album tracks like
"Glitter in Their Eyes," "Beneath the Southern Cross" and
"Summer Cannibals." The disc is rounded out by a newly
recorded cover of Prince's "When Doves Cry."
Disc two will concentrate on rare material, including
demos of early album tracks, live cuts from Smith's
extensive touring last year, and unreleased songs such as
"Wander I Go," "Come Back Little Sheba," and the new
studio cut "Higher Learning -- Contemplation." The disc
closes with "Notes to the Future," a poem Smith recited at
New York's St. Marks' Church this past New Year's Day.
Smith and her band, which includes original Patti Smith
Group guitarist Lenny Kaye and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty,
plans to tour the U.S. this spring.
