A release date has been set for Sheryl Crow's feature film debut. The
Minus Man, the directorial debut of Blade Runner producer/co-screenwriter
Hampton Fancher, is set for release by indie-production company The Shooting
Gallery in New York and Los Angeles on September 10 and nationwide on
September 24. The film also stars Owen Wilson, Janeane Garofalo and Dwight
Yoakam. Last year, Yoakam told RollingStone.com that he will play a
detective, but otherwise remained tight-lipped about the film. The Shooting
Gallery is equally hushed about the flick, which debuted at Sundance earlier
this year. A statement by the company described the film as "a darkly witty
and disquieting look at what can lie beneath the surface of normality," and
described Crow's character simply as "a woman on the wrong path" . . .

PARK CITY, Utah (Variety) - A portrait of the serial killer as beaming
cipher, "The Minus Man" is the kind of muted, anything-but-obvious
psychological thriller Hitchcock would have loved.
Owen Wilson leaves an indelible impression as Vann, a Canadian drifter whose
M.O. combines winning smile, pleasantly dim manner and a flask of
poison-laced Armaretto. While obviously not for the "Scream" brigade, the
picture is compelling and creepy enough to become a sleeper on the art-house
circuit, provided handlers mine strong reviews and inevitable word-of-mouth.
Rocker Sheryl Crow in a gutsy film debut will also boost box office returns.
The picture opens with harmless-seeming Vann heading out on the highway,
where he finds an asthmatic junkie (Crow) screaming to be put out of her
misery. Vann obliges. Crimes to come play out as variations on this opening
murder: Vann's victims cry out for intercession. All he has to do is
patiently wait and listen for the next victim to announce him- or herself.
Garofalo and Ruehl lend strong support as unsuspecting women in Vann's life;
Dennis Haysbert and C&W star Dwight Yoakam are the dogged dream-cops; and
Crow, who mainlines in her debut, suggests she has what it takes to be the
next big music-to-movies crossover.

The Minus Man follows the fortunes of a serial killer who chooses victims
he believes want to die - and Crow's character Caspar is the first to die
thanks to his twisted compassion. In the scene of Caspar / Crow's 'death'
Crow is pictured slumped over a toilet with a needle stuck in her arm - an
image which has caused outrage in the US. Crow is keeping quiet about her
motivation for taking the role, but as a recovering drug and alcohol addict,
she could well be making rather unsubtle anti-drugs statement.
