Sixpence named 1999's top 'breakthrough artist'
(Launch) - Sixpence None The Richer has been named the No. 1
"breakthrough artist" for 1999 in the Pop, Hot AC and AC radio
formats in the current issue of Radio & Records magazine. The band's
song "Kiss Me" became a worldwide hit this year - it was the
most-played song in 10 countries, including the U.S., Canada, the
U.K., Australia, Japan and Israel. The track has been featured in a
motion picture and on several television programs. In addition, it
was played earlier this year to an audience of over 200 million
viewers during the BBC telecast of Britain's Prince Edward's June 19
wedding to Sophie Rhys-Jones. Singer Leigh Nash said that despite the
accolades, Sixpence None The Richer doesn't have all that many music
awards to show for its success.
"I think for one thing, because if you look at the awards shows that
have happened, we were nominated for a Grammy in a Christian rock
category, so you can't be nominated for anything else there. And
then, we're not really an MTV band and we haven't been given any
awards, but I think a lot of it has been timing. This album's been
out forever and we'll see with the next one how it goes." Sixpence
recently attained a second major hit with "There She Goes," which
recently entered the top 30 on Billboard's Hot 100. The song is now a
top 10 hit in multiple R&R and Billboard Monitor formats. The new hit
from Sixpence's eponymous debut album is driving increased sales for
the collection, which was already certified gold and is now
approaching the million sales mark.
