"This album is loosely based around the notion of faith,"
Sheila Nicholls says of her sophomore long-player, Wake. "It's
about the troughs and peaks of having and not having it, what
we choose to put in, why it doesn't work and how vital it is
to have it anyway." The premise of faith is the pendulum of
Wake's internal clock, swaying consciously with Nicholls'
capability to evoke intimacy with her listeners through plenty
of musical atmosphere and lyrical inquisitiveness. "Do you
take rich drugs or poor drugs to hide your ache for something
more?" she questions during the album's Glen Ballard-produced
opener, "How Strong." While she's not as candid as Ani
DiFranco, Nicholls' unrestrained assertiveness, both lyrically
and vocally, is her strongest trait; listening to her album is
almost like having an private conversation with the artist
herself. At times, her melodies can be as radio-friendly as
Sheryl Crow and, at other moments, she can be effectively coy,
depending on the mood she's trying to convey. Overall, Wake's
balance of strings and delicacies works, and Nicholls'
confidence as a singer-songwriter is undeniable. Spend some
time with "How Strong," "Won't Get Lost In You," "Faith,"
"Bread And Water," "Love Song" and "Ruby."
