Skunk Anansie Post Orgasmic Chill
Label: Virgin
Genre: Alternative
File Under: Mommy, I'm scared
Rating: 80
The focus of the UK quartet Skunk Anansie is,
and always has been, squarely on lead singer
Skin. She's bald, black, and ballistic. She can
slide from a growl to a purr to operatic soar
quicker than you can say "Mommy, I'm scared,"
and the lush layering of her vocal personalities
has never been better.
Right off the bat, you can hear the ambitious
scope of Skunk Anansie. "Charlie Big Potato"
kicks off the rocking roller coaster with epic
force. After a passage of synthetic sitar, techno
buzz, and beats, the guitars arrive pounding and
pulsating, then enters the resilient and resonate
voice of Skin. The two forces face off in this
engaging and engulfing battle for five and a half
minutes.
A post-apocalyptic funk drives the media rant of
"On My Hotel T.V." before the band mixes
shimmering trip-hop with blunt blows to the
head. Though Skunk Anansie has seen scant
air-time in the states, a couple of the tracks on
Post Orgasmic Chill are radio-ready, including
the formulaic, Alanis-like "Lately" and the
tension-filled gentle buzz of "The Skank Heads,"
which will likely be a college spinner's favorite.
Unfortunately, there are times when Skin's
vessel slows down and veers towards affected
and overwrought, such as on the ballads
"Tracy's Flaw" and "Secretly." But when she's
spitting fire, this Post Orgasmic Chill burns
bright and solidifies Skunk Anansie's reputation
as one of the UK's hardest-hitting bands. 霊Scott D. Lewis
