Paying tribute to the Fab Four

Various artists covering the Beatles
(V2)
----------------------------------------------------------
The best covers in the world do exactly this: take a
famous song and twist it somewhat into something with its
own merit. Tori Amos did a great Smells Like Teen Spirit,
for example, whereas U2 usually wrecks the songs they
cover, especially if Frank Sinatra is involved. This album
reworks 17 songs by probably the best band there'll ever
be, the Beatles, and dips them like soft vanilla ice cream
cones into the flavours of those contemporary artists on
the borders of Much More Music.
And, in general, the flavour they're dipped into is, drum
roll please, VANILLA!
Meaning, no one really messed with any of the songs, save
a fine Revolution by Grandaddy and Heather Nova's We Can
Work it Out. Still, such classics are hard to flush. Eddie
Vedder's You've Got to Hide Your Love Away makes a man
nostalgic for both the '60s and the '90s, weird, and the
Vines's I'm Only Sleeping, thanks mostly to Lennon and
McCartney, does the deed.
I found both Ben Harper's Strawberry Fields Forever and
Ben Folds's Golden Slumbers to be useless, but Rufus
Wainwright's Across the Universe pretty. Again, mostly
thanks to the Beatles.
So not many brought much to the table. They were probably
scared to mess with perfection, shivering cowards! Oh
well, way better than the country tribute. (More on: The
Beatles).

gender is just an excuse, relationship shouldn't just be an excuse,
love is often an excuse, although sometimes these excuses are all
we have to hold onto,
death is the reason and living is the celebration
