Hey, everyone... My sister and I just returned from lilith fair here in vancouver (July 8th, 1999) which was the first show on the tour which is apperently the last lilith for awhile. Other than getting a nasty sunburn I had a pretty awesome time - I've seen better LILITH's, but this one had it's moments... first of all, here are the setlists for the bands I knew the songs of then I'll get into the details... SARAH MCLACHLAN: Possesion Black & White Hold On Adia I will remember You Ice Cream Building A Mystery Sweet Surrender Fumbling Towards Ecstacy -encore- Angel SHERYL CROW: A Change My Favorite Mistake Anything But Down Every day is a winding road Am I getting through (parts one and two) If it Makes you Happy The Difficult Kind Sweet Child O mine There Goes the Neighborhood DEBORAH COX: Sentimental Who do you Love Where do we go from Here Things just ain't the Same September It's over now Nobody's Supposed to be here BIF NAKED: Lucky Anything I need you (?) My Daddy's Getting Married Moment of Weakness Spaceman Chotee It was a beautiful Day for an all day concert - very hot and sunny, but there was a breeze and all so it was cool... we started off by watching SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER on the second stage... they played 4 songs - the lead singer is very short and cute. The second song they played was their big hit KISS ME (which is played on the radio WAY too much - but it was still quite fun). They also did a cover of THERE SHE GOES by "the la's" which is a song I know vaguely, but it was well done. After sixpence was BETH ORTON. a very tall lady in a bright red cowboy hat. She did a nice set of about 6 songs, but her music was all simalar, and she sang it all loudly with a heavy british accent - I honestly don't think she was a very good singer, but she played the guitar quite well. She had a big band with her too. We were right up front for these two bands, and we wanted to stay there and wait for BIF NAKED (the main reason we had come to lilith) but we wanted to see LUSCIOUS JACKSON first so we left our spot and headed over to the main stage. LUSCIOUS JACKSON seemed very cool, but I am not at all familiar with their music. They played their new single LADYFINGERS which was fun, and they also played NAKED EYE the one song I know. I liked them cause they were a little different - the 4 females in the band played all the live instruments - guitar's, bass, drums - they sort of rotated between them, and the lead singer also played some guitars and bass. They also had a guy on synthesizers, and a DJ spinning. We left halfway through them to go back to second stage to get up close for BIF. We were suprised to realize that we would NOT be able to get up front for bif cause second stage was packed! there were a LOT of bif naked fans there, it was quite suprising. For those of you who don't know, bif is quite hardcore, and I was suprised to see her on the lilith second stage. I expected her to come out and tear into a really loud fast song like moment of weakness... but instead she came on just with her guitarist and said "I'm gonna sing you a love song" and she started with her recent hit single "lucky". This was weird cause it was the only slow song she did in her set and it was first, but she pulled it off cause the audiance went absolutely wild!!! Bif was very loud and she has an amazing voice and an awesome stage presence! Her ranting in between songs was quite humerous cause she'd put on funny voice or try to talk like she was rapping or something. it was cool! After the first song the band came in and they were LOUD! She had a small but effective band! One drummer, one guitarist, and one bass player - every other band there at lilith today had at least 6 people in it... this was refreshing to see a small band. And bif just rocked for an hour and a half. She was BY FAR the hilight of the day! There was a mosh pit for her (something I've never seen at lilith before) and people started crowd surfing durring "Spaceman". The hilight of her set was "moment of weakness" this song is just so infectious and fun and it had everyone bouncing and singing along. It reminds me a little of no doubt, but that's ok it was great. She chose a wicked song to close with too - "chotee" this was the first song that really got me into her music and it kicked ass. I screamed so much durring her set that I lost my voice, and my stomach hurt, so I was quite calm for the next few acts. Back at the main stage and MYA was next. She came out to the beat of a HUGE band with about 8 members (guitars, bass, keyboards, drums, percussion - plus 4 dancers - 2 male and 2 female) and she started with "Ghetto Superstar". I really didn't care for her music, and I honestly thought she had a bad voice. She is only 19 though, and I have to admit she put on a really fun show! Despite the music, she herself was very entertaining! She did some really cool dancing, including a segment where they brought in a platform with pickups on it and she tap danced to the beat of her drummer playing the bongos. It was very cool! At the end of her set she played "Take Me There" and she brought out about 15 kids from the audiance and danced with them on stage which I found very cool of her. After quite a LONG wait DEBORAH COX came out. I was not really looking forward to her, cause I'm not into R&B, but I tell you - she was INCREDIBLE! She came out with two dancers/backupsingers, and she was wearing all white - tight tight white plastic pants, and a tight white tank top, along with a white neckpiece, she looked gorgeous! She started out with three older singles of hers (Sentimental, Who do you Love, and Where do we go from Here) which really got the audiance going. I noticed that she has a very dynamic voice, and she is a great live performer! She is also extremely sweet on stage! She was so nice in between songs, talking to the audiance, waving and blowing kisses, and smiling the whole way through. She seemed very down to earth. Before each song she would introduce it and tell a small story about it (I appreciated this cause I was able to write down a setlist) at one point she asked how we enjoyed the artists we'd seen so far, and then went on to say how excited she was to hear SHERYL CROW and SARAH MCLACHLAN cause they were her favorites! I don't belive it, but it was sweet. Her band was slightly smaller than Mya's, but much better. They really jammed a lot of the songs. The hilight of her set was her closing song which she introduced as "the longest running #1 R&B single ever!" and played "nobody's supposed to be here" which worked well as a last song. She did the jazzy slow original version NOT the remix, and it was fantastic! She really got wailing at the end and it sent shivers down my spine! She waved and left stage, then returned again (while the band was still doing their big finish) and sang a bit more improv. It was superb. She was a great performer, and I was very suprised that I enjoyed her so much. She did an awesome job. At 7:45 SHERYL CROW came out. This was the biggest dissapointment of the day. For months I have been listening to the new album and getting ready and I was SO excited about seeing Sheryl Crow perform! Well, she was good, but she did only hit singles (other than two songs) and played for only 40 minutes. I didn't find her setlist very effective either. She came out wearing black pants and a black tank top and opened with A CHANGE - a good song, but she could have done something a little darker for an opening song - oh well.... I really was hoping to hear "I Shall Belive" (I thought she did this at every show) and "Crash and Burn" and other ones from the new album, as well as some from her older album - but instead we heard a mess of hit singles. I was really dissapointed. Her singing was good, but the songs stayed very much the way they are on the albums. She also didn't have good interplay with the audiance. She just kind of swore at us and stuff in between songs "Hair grows back for fucks sake!" she yelled when she was talking about her new (hideous) haircut. The hilight of her set was "There goes the neighborhood" which was not a good closer (it was too upbeat and too hit singleish) but it was well performed nonetheless, and a very fun song. Oh yes, and one final note - I'm sorry but I just have to include this - she has the UGLIEST guitar player I have ever seen. I have never seen a man so ugly in my entire life. God was he ugly. My sister and I tried not to look at him he was so ugly. To make a long story short we got up as close as we could (about 4 people away from the stage - pretty damn close, but we were squished and uncomfortable) to see Sarah. Ok... my one complaint and this is to the AUDIANCE. There is NOTHING more annoying than when an audiance is singing along SO loud that all you can hear is them. It just spoils the show! This always happens durring sarah mclachlan at lilith, and it really ruins her set. I want to hear her sing, not the whining 15 year old girls behind me. It kind of sucks having the show end at 10:00, because it was still bright outside when sarah played. It just started to get dark as her set was nearing the end - this depleated some of the lighting effects. My other complaint about sarah is that she always does the songs EXACTLY the same every time she does them live. She has nice arrangments that are different from the album, but every time I hear angel live it's the same. Every time I hear possesion live it's the same ect ect ect. I wish she would spice things up a bit. I get bored quickly - this is why I'm such a big Tori Amos fan, cause she is never the same in concert. Oh I first must say, the three songs I REALLY REALLY wanted to hear were: I will remember you (I don't know why, I just like this one lately!) Hold on (I love this ever since I heard the one on MIRRORBALL) and FEAR. She came out in the most INTERESTING get-up, but it was really fun! Blue sequenced pants, a white tank top, and a big brown COWBOY hat which she kept on through the entire show! I was SO SUPRISED! I thought it was actually a very cool move! She opened with "Posession" which was so weird cause I'm used to it as a climactic piece, but it was cool at the very beginning! and I knew we had a different last song for her main set, and that made me wonder! After that she started talking, and I must say she was very cheerful and nice up on stage. Usually when I see her in vancouver it is the last lilith and she gets so sappy, but she was really good this time around! After this she sat at the piano and started "Black & White" solo. Then the band came in and she stood and sang it. It was very good, I sort of expected her to play this one. Next she started "Hold On" and I went wild cause one of my wishes was answered! This was awesome! I love the way she sings this live. It's a comprimise between the original, and the solo piano one on freedom sessions. It was really nice! It was weird as a third song too, cause she opened with it at lilith 97. Adia was next - very nice. THEN she did "I will remember you" and I was so happy to hear it! It was beautiful! She DIDN'T play piano on this! She played guitar - I was suprised. Either way, it sounded just as good. After this they went into "Ice Cream" WITH the band (every time I've seen her do this before it's just her and her husband) - but it still sounded the same. Building a Mystery and Sweet Surrender followed - nothing too special. THEN came the hilight of the night! She did "Fumbling Towards Ecstacy" under the mirrorball. It was incredible. The loud drums add so much to this live, and I was really happy to hear it cause I've never seen her do it before. She came out for a very predictable encore of Angel which was nice, but the audiance seemed more interested in the bouncers kicking someone out for pointing a laser pen than they did for sarah. They finished the whole show off after this by inviting all the artists on stage for a big huge jam of "Put A Little Love in Your Heart". A nice closing, but it doesn't beat '97 when they did "big yellow taxi" Overall, an awesome show, a fun day, but not as good as lilith '97 or lilith '98. Hilight of the day was BIF NAKED. What an awesome performer she is. But overall this lilith seemed to be lacking a bit. what was missing? in two simple words: PAULA COLE. matt -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.twbbs.org) ◆ From: 192.192.50.114
