Lilith Fair tour comes to an end
(Launch) - The Lilith Fair tour ended its three-year run Tuesday in
Edmonton, Alberta. Founded by singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan - who
actually kicked it off with four prototype gigs during 1996 - the
festival has featured a diverse group of female musicians and
female-led bands playing on three stages and it's been in a
neck-and-neck race with OzzFest as the top drawing festival for each
of the last three summers. Lilith has donated $1 from each ticket
sold to assorted women's shelters and assistance organizations.
Bonnie Raitt, one of the handful of classic rockers to take the
Lilith stage (along with the Pretenders, Pat Benatar and Emmylou
Harris), said that Lilith remains one of the unique experiences of
her long career. "My age group is certainly different than the Lilith
Fair, the major difference for us is to look out and see all these
people in bikini tops. I don't think I've every seen that many
semi-naked women in one place. Certainly not at my shows in the
'70s."
