The interesting thing about Rico Washington isn't that he needed 1,134
minor-league games or 3,980 at-bats to reach the major leagues two months
before celebrating his 30th birthday.

Springfield and Memphis. He divorced and remarried. Four years ago,
Washington lost his mother and example in life, Annie Marie Washington.

Last June at Memphis, Washington tore cartilage in his left knee, needed
surgery, rehabilitated and returned just in time to suffer a broken cheek in
an ugly Sept. 1 collision with Springfield left fielder Amaury Marti.

Third base remains Washington's primary position, but he also has played

The Cardinals rate his arm as above average and his glove as no worse than
major-league average. But generously listed at 5 feet 9 with only three
seasons of more than 10 home runs, he has a skill set that was perceived as a
poor fit for a traditional power-producing position.
