這是首關於尋求樂趣後的空虛≒原罪≒自我放縱過完一生然而覺醒的贖罪之歌
也是 Okkervil River 的 Black Sheep Boy 整張專輯所貫徹的意念
Black Sheep 指的是敗家子、害群之馬（不是黯陰羊）

未請自來的鬼魂指的是這個念頭逐漸浮現
而明顯地並不是他所預料的

隨著罪惡感的增強
贖罪的想法就像淚水中的種子般萌發

The way an unborn baby's ear
unfolds in your belly.
他終於驚覺自己一直在傷害自己與他人
新生兒的耳朵比喻著黑羊男孩新的體悟
This infection gets stronger every year,
this direction of a tear going down your cheek.
And there is no escaping it.
There is no escaping the thing that is making it's home in your radio.
radio指的是黑羊男孩的內心
而這個念頭已經沒辦法視而不見了(there's no escaping it)

into a garden sweetly smelling
of the softest sleeping flowers
狹窄的巷道指的是眼淚流過的淚痕
用bless來表示他終於體驗到這個壓抑在心中許久的想法
fallen隱喻著黑羊男孩缺乏的安全感
也代表了接下來的危機
後二句有押韻
指的是黑羊男孩一直依賴的避難所
now they sit under the sidewalk
now they're waiting for the shining
of some future sun to show us
當然他還沒找到真正的庇護
而期望著future sun能照耀出他的本性
all that is your beauty
oh, and all that brings you pleasure
I could sigh into your hide
and say I hope I'm here forever
這首歌的I, you, us指的都是黑羊男孩
他雖然可以擁有逃離的快感
(放棄贖罪這個念頭 繼續當原本的自己)
但他知道他不能一直這樣下去

with the wall where you drew windows
favorite pillows指的是安逸
missing children我猜是所有的理由與藉口
他以為自我放縱能帶給他快感
但從牆上畫的窗戶又能看到什麼？

climbing up into the air
and crumbling down into a fountain
where the water waits forever
like a quiet distant treasure
山峰代表了他自己創造的難關
噴泉的水即是淚水
而遠方寧靜的寶藏代表了
他一直以來尋求的便是克服這道關卡

when you leave this tiny alley
但遲早他的反省會結束
他還是得回到他的生活

with your horns all hung with cedar

brushing past them in the ether
當男羊男孩遇到內心的自己
cedar指的是榮耀與自負
第三行用brushing past "me" 但接下來又是brushing past "them"
指的是歌詞中所指的自己和敘事者已經合而為一
也代表這趟自我反省之路已到終點
scream all this is window dressing
all you are is flimsy curtains
在重要關頭他發現自己的一生一點意義也沒有
只是個沒有價值的裝飾品(flimsy curtains)
watch you flame up with a word from us

而他的某個人格看到了事實並憐憫著
其他已經不存在的自我

主唱簡介:
Will Sheff (born July 7, 1976) is the frontman for the Austin, Texas-based
indie band Okkervil River (1998–present). Originally from New Hampshire, he
is also a founding member and co-songwriter (along with former Okkervil
bandmate Jonathan Meiburg) for Shearwater (2001–present), another Austin
band. Sheff writes and performs many songs as a solo artist whilst juggling
his commitments to Okkervil River and Shearwater, but has released no music
as a solo artist. As well as writing and singing songs, he plays the guitar,
the piano, the banjo, and the harmonica.
Sheff is also a noted rock critic, and wrote a column for file sharing
website Audiogalaxy while it was still active.
Sheff was an English major at Macalester College in St Paul, MN.
He has collaborated with The Mendoza Line on "Aspect of an Old Maid" and with
Palaxy Tracks. He is currently helping produce the debut album of Bird of
Youth. He is currently dating Beth Wawerna of Bird of Youth.
