MARIAH CAREY Dreamlover (Columbia)
The sugary r&b lite of the album version, co-written by Mariah and Dave
Hall, was a pleasant (albeit undemanding) listening experience but the Def
Club Mix was a sheer Morales masterpiece from 1993- one of his greatest
remixing years. Kicking off with a spiky-toned percussion introduction,
Morales then drops into one of his finest trademark piano riffs underpinned
by a delicate, unobtrusive bass with further embellishment from the
tenderest of percussion licks and dashes of staccato sax with La Carey's
vocals floating lightly on top. Usually a sufferer from the r&b school of
unnecessary vocal gymnastics, Carey is much more restrained in Morales'
assured hands, turning in a vocal performance which positively aches with
longing. An absolute dancefloor smash which Morales never quite managed to
repeat.
