「全米桜祭り」で福島の児童らが太鼓演奏披露へ
全米桜祭り協会と日米協会などは１日、ワシントンで２０日から始まる「全米桜祭り」
で、東京電力福島第１原発事故で計画的避難区域に指定された福島県川俣町山木屋地区
の小中学生ら１３人が太鼓の演奏会を開くと発表した。今年は東京からワシントンに桜
の苗木が贈られてから１００周年に当たり、さまざまな記念行事が予定されている。
演奏会は４月１６日。山木屋地区は太鼓演奏が盛んで、小中学生らは東日本大震災後
も練習を続けてきた。４月１４日にはパレードにも参加する。１００周年記念行事とし
ては、雅楽師東儀秀樹や歌手ＭＩＳＩＡらを招き、６０００人規模の開会式を今月２５
日に開催。日本側が全米の３０以上の都市に桜の苗木を贈ることも計画している。

Peak bloom and Centennial Plans Announced!
Today, the Festival and DC leadership gathered to announce plans for the
Centennial Celebration. Paying tribute to the 100-year anniversary of the
gift of trees, an unprecedented spectacular begins March 20, the first day of
spring. The City in Bloom unites the region through April 27. Outstanding
star talent is part of this year’s Festival. The Opening Ceremony on Sunday,
March 25 presented by Daiichi Sankyo and Metlife, includes two of Japan’s
most exciting and popular musical artists, MISIA and Hideki Togi. They join
Sara Bareilles, who became a household name in the US with her hit “Love
Song.” And that’s only the beginning. ABC’s Katie Couric co-hosts the
nation’s premier springtime Parade along with special correspondent Alex
Trebek. Members of the Taft, Ozaki, and Takamine families join us for the
historical milestone, and renowned arts and culture is front and center. The
peak bloom prediction of the blossoms is March 24 – 31, but the Festival has
5 weeks of events and programs that will amaze. Make plans to be in
Washington, DC for the nation’s greatest springtime celebration!
