Notes: Cheng has had a solid pro career so far after a very good amateur
career, including pitching for the 1996 Little League World Series
championship team. Other teams stayed away from offering Cheng big bucks to
sign because of rumored arm problems (due to high pitch counts) but there
were no signs of injury issues in his first two pro seasons. That said, Cheng
needed shoulder surgery late in 2006, but was expected back by spring
training 2007. The biggest knock on Cheng to this point in his career is his
lack of fastball command. He relies too heavily on his curveball, which is
nasty and usually unhittable. Cheng led the Appalachian League in strikeouts
in 2004 and finished third in 2005 in the Midwest League. He is still
developing his change-up and will need it at higher levels. Cheng
acclimatized well to North America and learned English rapidly. He needs to
be more aggressive on the mound.
