According to George King at the New York Post, Derek Jeter and Bobby Abreu of
the New York Yankees were fleeced by fellow teammate, and supposed "
friend,"
Hideki Matsui.
Apparently at the beginning of Spring Training, Jeter and Abreu
made a bet where the first person to get married would owe the other person
money… what was Abreu thinking (a list of Jeter's "mates" can be found in our
2008 Yankees team outlook)??
Anyway, since Abreu has a girlfriend currently, he
was given a 6-month timeframe; Jeter, with no steady girlfriend at present, was
given 1 year.
Enter Matusi. He overheard of this bet, and asked in on the action. Well, it
seems that reporters informed Derek Jeter in the Yankees clubhouse that Matsui
went out and got married in NYC yesterday. Jeter replied, "How do you say
sneaky in Japanese?
If he wanted the money all he had to do was ask. I thought
I had a chance but I didn't know the guy got married (Wednesday)." He was
obviously in shock. Abreu seemed equally in awe of Matsui's antics, "
He set us
up. But it's good. I have to write a check and send it to Japan. I think it's
for $1,000."
Well played Hideki, well played! He should fire up a $20 gift certificate to
both Jeter and Abreu, so they can go get their fleeces.
