The window of opportunity for the Boston Red Sox to sign right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka will soon reach the half-closed point, and apparently there's a gap about the size of Mt. Fuji separating the two sides. It has been nearly two weeks since the Red Sox received exclusive negotiating rights to the 26-year-old starting pitcher and if a deal hasn't been finalized before midnight (ET) on Dec. 14, the $51.1 million bidding fee submitted by Boston would be returned. Matsuzaka would then return to the Seibu Lions become an unrestricted free agent after the 2007 season -- allowing his agent, Scott Boras, to negotiate with any Major League organization. Exactly what Matsuzaka wants -- or what the Red Sox are offering -- remains a mystery. But a report in the Boston Herald said the initial offer was roughly half of what Boras is seeking for his client, which is believed to be around $14 million per season. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 哇...哇...哇....比一千萬還要更多了 That's the same amount Boras reportedly is seeking for another of his clients, outfielder J.D. Drew, and the Red Sox are among the teams in hot pursuit of the left-handed hitter who led the Los Angeles Dodgers in RBIs last season with 100. Drew voided the final three years of his five-year, $55 million contract with the Dodgers. The Boston Globe reported that the Red Sox and Drew may soon come to terms on a multiyear deal that would make him the highest-paid player on the team. But a potential stumbling block remains. Since an ownership change prior to the 2002 season, the Red Sox have not signed a player for longer than four years. That is at least one less year that other top-of-the-line free agents already have signed for this offseason. Outfielder Alfonso Soriano tops the list, signing an eight-year, $136 million contract with the Chicago Cubs. Gary Matthews Jr., (Angels), Juan Pierre (Dodgers) and Carlos Lee (Astros) also have changed business addresses for a total of 16 years and $194 million. The Red Sox have several Hot Stove burners turned up, including one that involves left fielder Manny Ramirez, which could be linked to the Drew situation. ESPN reported late Monday afternoon that the Red Sox are "aggressively" shopping Ramirez, listing the Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles among the teams that have inquired about the veteran slugger who would become expendable if the Sox sign Drew. The San Francisco Chronicle reported earlier in the day that the Giants also are interested in Ramirez, but pointed out that there are numerous obstacles ahead, including the future of Barry Bonds. If he re-signs with the Giants, it would blow any potential trade for Ramirez right out of McCovey Cove. It should also be mentioned that because he has 10 years of MLB service and the last five with the same team, Ramirez has veto rights to any proposed trade. He has said in the past that he would prefer to stay in the American League. In other Hot Stove developments heading into the final week before the Winter Meetings: Dodgers: Left-hander Randy Wolf, who grew up in Southern California, appears on the verge of shunning more lucrative offers from other teams to sign with the Dodgers. The Los Angeles Times reported that a one-year deal worth $7.5 million and an option year based on innings pitched could be signed before club officials depart on Thursday for the Dominican Republic. Wolf, who played at Woodland Hills El Camino Real High and Pepperdine University, would provide some insurance in case right-hander Greg Maddux departs via free agency. Giants: A contract agreement with infielder Rich Aurilia is being finalized and should be announced before general manager Brian Sabean leaves for the Winter Meetings, according to the Chronicle. Pirates: According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates are seeking a trade for a slugger and have had internal discussions about pursuing Reds left fielder Adam Dunn. But Dunn's $10.5 million salary for 2007, and his high strikeout rate (194 strikeouts in 561 at-bats), could make a trade for him unlikely. Also, the Pirates picked up the $3 million option on left-handed reliever Damaso Marte's contract. Indians: Disregard any rumors linking right-hander Jake Westbrook with the trade market. Indians GM Mark Shapiro told the Plain Dealer that he doesn't have much interest in trading a starter for bullpen help. The newspaper also mentioned that the Indians have Angels reliever Scot Shields on their radar screen, and could be competing with the Phillies, Orioles and Athletics for outfielder Trot Nixon. Brewers: A waiting game continues for free-agent outfielder Dave Roberts, but GM Doug Melvin said he expects the 34-year-old to sign with the Giants. The Rangers, who lost Matthews to the AL West-rival Angels, also are pursuing Roberts, who is said to prefer playing for a West Coast team. The Brewers may now move on to an even more veteran free agent like Kenny Lofton or Steve Finley, though either player would be viewed as a one-year bridge to prospect Tony Gwynn, Jr. Melvin told MLB.com that the club has discussed both Lofton and Finley, but is still weighing its options. Braves: GM John Schuerholz still isn't providing any indications of his interest in bringing Tom Glavine back to Atlanta, telling The New York Times that the club is "examining every possibility available to us' in an effort to improve its pitching. Glavine has 290 MLB victories, 242 of them with the Braves. Complete coverage > Blue Jays: The Toronto Star reported that the Blue Jays will hold a press conference on Wednesday to announce the signing of catcher Rod Barajas, pending the results of a physical. Details of the deal were rumored to be two years and more than $6 million. Padres: According to FOXSports.com, the Padres are exploring the idea of signing Maddux, who is seeking a two-year deal in the $22.5 million range. Angels: After striking out in their attempts to sign free agents Soriano and Aramis Ramirez, the Angels will now explore trades. Joe Crede of the White Sox is a possible target. Club officials say any deal probably would not be a blockbuster, and they wouldn't rule out the possibility of versatile Chone Figgins reporting to Spring Training as the third baseman. Diamondbacks: Infielder Craig Counsell and pitcher Miguel Batista might be offered salary arbitration, according to the Arizona Republic. Both players are "Type B" free agents and the team would get a "sandwich" pick as compensation. It is unlikely that outfielder Luis Gonzalez would receive a similar offer because, if accepted, he would make at least $9.2 million in 2007. Jim Street is a reporter for MLB.com.
