Much ado has been made about the Red Sox switching baseball philosophies from
an offensive powerhouse capable of bashing opponents to a
pitching-and-defense team looking to specialize in run prevention.

offensive season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and there might be stretches
when the Sox struggle offensively against good pitching.

Top Candidate To Disappoint:   Adrian Beltre is certainly worthy of the
defensive accolades, but the silky-smooth third baseman is coming off a
horrendous offensive year. He was battling injuries and a pitcher’s ballpark
at Safeco Field, but there won’t be a whole lot of patience for the free
agent third baseman if he can’t match Mike Lowell’s offensive output.

franchise history. There will be a big adjustment for Francona after his best
friend and bench coach, Brad Mills left Boston to become manager of the
Houston Astros this offseason.

—rhp Gaby Hernandez was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox from the
Seattle Mariners organization on Feb. 10. The 23-year-old Hernandez was 10-9
with a 5.23 ERA for Class AAA Tacoma last season and had 98 strikeouts in 146
1/3 innings. Hernandez was drafted and developed by the New York Mets after
they chose him in the third round of the 2004 draft. He was shipped to the
Florida Marlins in the Paul Lo Duca trade and then again on to the Mariners
in exchange for LHP Arthur Rhodes.

‧ LHP Jon Lester and RHP Jonathan Papelbon have already reported to the Red
Sox minor league development complex in Fort Myers, Fla., for workouts in
anticipation of the start of spring training on Feb. 18. “I’ve never been a
big believer in a No. 1 guy or an ace,” said Lester. “Everybody’s relied
upon to go out every five days and pitch.”

‧ RHP Curt Schilling caused a minor stir in Boston recently when he posted
something on his Facebook page hinting that perhaps he should come out of
retirement. Schilling hasn’t thrown a pitch in anger since the 2007 World
Series season, and a major surgery on his right arm in 2008 seemed to signal
the end of his career. “Maybe I should come out of retirement like what
Brett Favre does every year,” mused Schilling on Facebook, but he’s also
confirmed with the Boston Herald that he has no intentions of making a
comeback.

‧ RHP Josh Beckett enters the season on the verge of free agency, and former
Sox pitcher Curt Schilling is urging the Red Sox on his 38pitches.com blog to
re-sign the pitcher who led Boston to its 2007 World Series title. Beckett
hasn’t been quite as dominant the last two seasons, but he’s still only 29
and is a key piece on a team built around pitching and defense. “Josh works
from a different perspective than many; it’s why he was so good so young. He
pushes himself with an internal bar and set of values that not many kids have,

” Schilling wrote on his blog. “That isn’t going to change; in fact, I’d
argue that it’s only gotten better over the past few years. He knows he’s
in the game’s toughest division, he knows who people consider the best and I
promise you he doesn’t ever take the ball, no matter who he is facing, and
not believe 100% he’s going to not only win, but dominate.”
‧ RHP Robert Manuel was designated for assignment by the Red Sox, making
space for RHP Gaby Hernandez on the 40-man roster, without ever having thrown
a pitch in the Red Sox organization. Manuel, 25, has never appeared in the
major leagues but put up a 2.88 ERA in 51 games for the Class AAA teams of
both the Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners last season. Manuel saved 14
games and posted a 46/19 K/BB ratio in 65 2/3 innings, but it appears that
his short time with the Sox is already finished after Boston claimed him off
waivers from Seattle in November.

Okajima, Delcarmen and Ramirez. Bard has a chance to blossom into a special
bullpen talent in his second big-league season.

Beyond that it’s a lineup that’s balanced and should essentially write
itself out on the lineup card each game, but there’s definitely an absence

hitters in the middle, as they did during the prime years of David Ortiz and
Manny Ramirez.
