For the second straight year, manager Ron Gardenhire chose right-hander
Scott Baker to be his opening-day starter.

But this year, Baker is hoping he actually ends up on the mound April 5
in Anaheim.

Baker started last spring with two positives—he had a new four-year,
$15.25 million contract, and he was scheduled to pitch the opener.

Baker is hesitant to say his injury or his new contract played a part in

In those final 24 starts of the regular season, Baker compiled a 3.67
ERA.

Baker said he’s humbled by the opening-day start and is eager to begin
his 2010 season the way he finished ’09.

Ron Gardenhire has expressed his disbelief that Valencia—who hasn’t
spent a day in the big leagues—will be ready by opening day, but the
Twins would be thrilled if the skipper was wrong.

Gardenhire said.

“He knows that he has to go in the outfield and take some balls there,
too. He’s got to be able to move around the field with the situation
we’ve got going on, and I think he’s willing to do just about anything
to make the ballclub. That’s exactly what you have to do.”

plenty of people who want to pitch. He can only hurt himself.”

The Twins didn’t sign any real superstars this offseason, but their
additions have bolstered the 2010 lineup into one of the team’s
strongest in years.

Last year, the team went into spring confident its young starters could
handle the workload, a confidence that was shaken during the season.

They hope another year of experience will do the trick and that bringing
back RHP Carl Pavano will have the same positive impact it had down the
stretch in 2009.

Spring Focus:

The Twins need to decide on their fifth starter, choose a third baseman
from a pool of four players and find a backup center fielder.

They’ve got decent competition for the fifth starting job, though not
great options for third base or a backup outfielder.

In all, these are mostly minor problems for a team that should be an
American League Central Division favorite.

How Neshek responds to his first year back on the mound after missing
nearly two full seasons with elbow issues that resulted in Tommy John
surgery will be an interesting and important storyline for the Twins.

Before Neshek got hurt early in the 2008 season, he’d become one of
the AL’s best setup men.

GM Bill Smith said Punto, Tolbert and perhaps even Casilla (who has never
played the outfield in the majors or minors) are options for a backup
center fielder, with Kubel able to back up in left and right field.

he’ll play in the big leagues at some point this season if he’s unable
to win a job out of spring training.

Valencia, 25, batted .286 with a .305 on-base percentage, seven home runs
and 41 RBI in 71 games for Class AAA Rochester in 2009 after his promotion
from Class AA.

C Wilson Ramos

The Twins love Ramos’ size, strength and his arm, but his skills remain
raw.

The 22-year-old has not played above Class AA, where he batted .317 with
a .341 on-base percentage, four homers and 29 RBI in 54 games during his
injury-shortened 2009 season.
