Never mind that he led the National League in hitting last year. All-Star
shortstop Hanley Ramirez spent a lot of time this winter wondering if
he could’ve had a better season.

Ramirez set a team record with a .342 average, becoming the first National
League shortstop since Pittsburgh’s Dick Groat in 1960 to win a batting

“I could have hit .370,” he said, “but that last week I went a little bit

“I want to improve everything, be more consistent,” he said.

Grapefruit League’s best hot dog. The Marlins have been there since 2003,
replacing the Montreal Expos as co-tenants with the St. Louis Cardinals. It’
s about 90 minutes from Sun Life Stadium in Miami, allowing fairly easy
access for the Marlins’ regular-season fan base. With the departure of the
Orioles from Fort Lauderdale, the Marlins now have the southernmost spring
camp on Florida’s east coast, which means more travel this spring than
players would prefer.

WHERE:

Top Candidate To Surprise:   RHP Anibal Sanchez finished strong in 2009 after
two stints on the disabled list earlier in the year because of shoulder
problems. His 2.86 ERA after returning to action for good on Aug. 21 was
third lowest among NL starters over the remainder of the season. He arrives
in camp knowing he has a healthy shoulder, which should give him a huge
mental boost.

Anibal Sanchez 去年前半季因為肩膀的傷痛進入傷兵名單兩次，不過球季結束前倒是表現

Top Candidate To Disappoint:   CF Cameron Maybin  is a historically slow
starter; he won the job out of camp last year before being demoted to Class
AAA New Orleans on May 10. This spring, he arrives in camp not fully
recovered from surgery he had Nov. 8 to repair a partial labrum tear in his
left shoulder. He’s the starting center fielder for now, but only on paper.
He faces another uphill climb to win the job outright.

失望：

Authority Figures:   Manager Fredi Gonzalez guided the team to an 87-win
finish—third best in franchise history—but almost lost his job after the
season when the team barely missed the playoffs. It will be interesting to
see what happens if the Marlins struggle early this season. Gonzalez (242-243
in three seasons) will work with three new coaches: pitching coach Randy St.
Claire, first base/infield coach Joe Espada and third base/outfield coach
Dave Collins. Hitting coach Jim Presley and bench coach Carlos Tosca are back.

球隊去年在Fredi的帶領下去年拿到了87勝，這可是隊史的第三高。不過也因為只差一點

—rhp Mike MacDougal signed a minor league contract with the Marlins,
giving the team another option in case RHP Leo Nunez falters in the closer’s
role. MacDougal converted 20 of 21 save chances for the Nationals last year.
He had surgery on his right hip after the season ended.

‧ LF Chris Coghlan wants to improve his running game this year. “I want to

ROSTER REPORT

The Marlins didn’t make any changes to their rotation, even though it
largely fell short last year despite strong seasons from RHP Josh Johnson and
Ricky Nolasco. The nucleus of the offense is back. The key questions are at
first base, where prospects Logan Morrison and Gaby Sanchez will battle it
out, and in the rotation, where three spots are up for grabs. There’s also
work to be done rebuilding the bullpen.

Spring Focus:   The Marlins need to choose from six candidates to fill three
rotation spots. They need to choose a first baseman from two prospect
candidates. CF Cameron Maybin needs to prove his surgically repaired left
shoulder is healthy. And they need to sort out their bullpen, although they’
re confident they have the right players in camp.

春訓觀察重點：
目前先發輪值中的3個位置有6個人在競爭。一壘手是兩位潛力新秀的競爭，中外野的位置

Johnson and Nolasco are the only certainties as the team enters camp. Six
other candidates need to win jobs. Volstad will add a slider and is trying to
refine his delivery to improve his sinker, which stayed up too often last
year (29 home runs allowed). Sanchez needs to prove his shoulder is healthy.
With a strong spring, RHP Rick VandenHurk could unseat Miller or West. RHP
Hayden Penn, out of options, is a dark horse.

The Marlins have rarely opened the season with the closer who had the job
going into camp. They hope Nunez breaks that trend. They have insurance with
newcomers Turnbow and McClung, but both veterans must pitch well to win jobs.
LHP Hunter Jones could win a job if the team can trade Pinto. Only Nunez,
Meyer and Sanches are certainties to win jobs.

預計牛棚：
Marlins 很少在開季的時候就決定終結者的人選，期望 Nunez在春訓的表現能打破這個傳

Coghlan will return to the leadoff spot after hitting .336 in that position—
tops in baseball among No. 1 hitters—as a rookie last year. That means the
Marlins won’t have the ideal speed they prefer at the top of the order.
Ramirez seems primed for another batting title after hitting .342 last year
while batting third. Cantu, Uggla and Ross combined to hit 71 home runs in
2009. Spots 2, 7 and 8 could be tinkered, depending on the progress of
Morrison, Sanchez and Maybin this spring.

預計打線：

Helms and Carroll will win jobs, as will Bonifacio, who could end up
replacing Alfredo Amezaga (free agent) as the team’s super-utility player.
Paulino will split catching duties with John Baker. Jimenez, the team’s Rule
5 draft pick, must win a spot or be returned to Boston. He could lose out to
invitees Mike Lamb, Danny Richar, Hector Luna or Brian Barden.

Helms、Carroll、 Bonifacio這三位應該能獲得工作。Bonifacio應該會取代 Alfredo
Amezaga成為最佳工具人。 Paulino跟 John Baker將輪流接補。規則5選來的 Jimenez必

Top Rookies:   Logan Morrison and Gaby Sanchez, two of the organization’s
top rookies, will battle it out for the first base job. Sanchez had that
chance last spring but opened the year at Class AAA New Orleans, where he hit
.289 with 16 homers and 56 RBIs. He hit .238 with two homers and three RBI in
21 September games for the Marlins. Morrison, the Florida State League MVP
for Class A Jupiter in 2008, was limited to 79 games for Class AA
Jacksonville in 2009 because of a small fracture on his right thumb. He
finished with eight homers, 47 RBIs and a .277 batting average.

OF Mike Stanton, who hit 28 home runs and had 92 RBIs last year in a season
split between Class A and Class AA, is the organization’s top prospect, but
he’s projected to spend most of 2010 in Jacksonville or New Orleans.

ready for opening day.
