The Indians’ front office will operate slightly differently during the
2010 season than in the past, following the announcement of a
re-organization of titles and duties that will take effect at the end of
the 2010 season.

Paul Dolan will move from club president to chairman and CEO, Mark
Shapiro will be promoted from general manager to club president, and Chris

Shapiro said he and Antonetti will work closely during the 2010 season on
all baseball decisions, with one exception.

The new division of power was in effect recently during the Indians’
managerial search.

Antonetti was actively involved in the interviewing of all the candidates
and was given a full voice in the final decision to hire Manny Acta as the
club’s new manager.

Shapiro said much of his time during the 2010 season will be spent working
on the business side of the organization, which will be part of his

The arrangement for the 2010 season will be similar to the way the Indians

short-term decisions but letting Shapiro make the ones that would
impact the club beyond the 2001 season.

reached agreement with the Indians on a one-year contract, according to
media reports.

The deal was pending a physical, scheduled for Feb. 23. Branyan, a free
agent, had a career year last year with Seattle, belting 31 home runs.

He was originally drafted and developed by the Indians, and the club had
an interest in him this year as insurance at first base and left field.

He then hit so well there he earned a promotion to Cleveland.

In 300 at-bats in Class AAA, Marte hit .327 with 18 home runs and 66 RBI.

“He’s a talented hitter, but he tends to get a little too pull conscious,”
 said Nunnally, the Indians’ new major league hitting coach.

“We tried to get him to use the whole field more, to have more of a
right-center field approach, and he responded to it well.”

Marte, who is back on the major league roster, is attempting to win a
spot with the Indians as a backup corner infielder.

hampered the last two years by shoulder woes that eventually required
surgery, hopes to return to something close to the 100-RBI,
middle-of-the-order slugger he was before his injury.

“I think he’s going to be fine,” said new Indians hitting coach Jon
Nunnally, who as the hitting coach at Class AAA Columbus last year worked
with Hafner during an injury-rehab assignment.

“His shoulder was still tired last year. It takes you a year after
shoulder surgery to get all your strength back. Travis has been working
out hard, he says he feels strong, and I see big things for him this year.”

受到了近兩年肩膀傷勢所苦,相繼進行手術治療

‧ SS Asdrubal Cabrera

could have a breakout season in 2010.

Moved from second base to shortstop, his more natural position, during the
2009 season, Cabrera responded by finishing 11th in the American League
in hitting with a .308 average.

He also led the Indians with 42 doubles.

Cabrera is expected to again be one of the Indians’ leaders both
offensively and defensively.

He conceivably could hit second in the lineup, behind OF Grady Sizemore,
which would give the Indians two base stealers at the top of the order.

Cabrera had 17 stolen bases last year.

The Indians had one of their most uneventful offseasons in several years.

The biggest news was the hiring of a new manager (Manny Acta) and a
completely new coaching staff.

There weren’t many significant player additions or subtractions.

Most of those came during the previous two years, when the club traded
its consecutive Cy Young Award winners and several other veterans in
preparation for a rebuilding program that will begin in earnest this
season.

of about 10 pitchers vying for five spots in the rotation.

Plenty of question marks surround the competition for the rotation.

Westbrook missed most of the last two years because of Tommy John surgery,
and he still has to prove he’s all the way back.

Carmona has statistically been one of the worst starters in the league
the last two years after winning 19 games in 2007.

Masterson is a candidate for both the rotation and bullpen.

In addition to Huff and Laffey, other candidates for the rotation include
LHP Jeremy Sowers, RHP Carlos Carrasco, RHP Mitch Talbot and RHP Hector
Rondon.

The only starter whose spot is secure is Westbrook, assuming he’s
healthy.

RHP Chris Perez, expected to be the backup closer, could move into the
role full-time.

Smith and Rafael Perez were both major disappointments last year, Smith
because of injuries, Perez because of poor performance—although Perez
was better in the second half.

Rivera was a reliever for the Nationals under new Indians manager Manny
Acta, giving him a leg up on other non-roster bullpen candidates, such
as RHP Jamey Wright, RHP Jason Grilli and LHP Mike Gosling.

Santana, who is expected to arrive from Class AAA Columbus sometime
during the season.

Brantley will compete with OF Trevor Crowe, OF Jordan Brown, OF Austin
Kearns and OF Shelley Duncan for the starting job in left field.

The right-handed hitting Grudzielanek could see time at second base vs.
left-handed pitching in place of left-handed hitting Luis Valbuena, who
struggles vs. left-handers.

The Indians are lefty-heavy in their lineup, making Kearns, a right-handed
hitter, a strong candidate as a fourth outfielder and possible platoon
partner with Michael Brantley in left field.

Branyan was signed Feb. 19 as insurance in case Kearns doesn’t pan out.

and 97 RBI, is one of the top prospects in all of minor league baseball.

He will likely start the season at Class AAA Columbus but is expected to
be promoted to Cleveland sooner rather than later.

Speedy OF Michael Brantley
