INSIDE PITCH

Shortstop Jose Reyes appears to have placed last season’s hamstring woes
behind him. On his first day at the Mets’ complex this spring, Reyes
high-stepped through a rope ladder laid on the grass. Then he pronounced
himself fully healed from a torn hamstring and tendon, the latter of which
required surgery to address.

游擊手 Jose Reyes顯然已將去年肌腱的困擾拋在腦後了。在春訓的第一天，他高高的跨

“The last five weeks I’ve been feeling very good,” Reyes said.

Reyes had been working out indoors on Long Island, N.Y. Four times a week he
sprinted and worked out his legs at one facility. Two days a week he went
elsewhere to hit in a cage and take ground balls on artificial turf. His
arrival in Port St. Lucie, Fla., marked his first time working out on a
baseball field since August.

Reyes believes the injury woes are behind him, despite being tormented by

strong in my mind. Hopefully that will never happen again. That’s no easy
injury that I had, because I had to get surgery. In 2004, when I had the
injury, I didn’t have to get surgery. It was easier that time.”

annual $75,000 naming-rights payment to St. Lucie County.


Top Candidate To Surprise:   Daniel Murphy has played third base, second
base, left field and first base in the past two seasons between the minors
and majors. Now, he has been tabbed as the Mets’ starting first baseman. He
should benefit from the stability and could build on a rookie season in which
he hit .266 with 38 doubles, 12 homers and 63 RBIs in 508 at-bats. Hitting
coach Howard Johnson predicts Murphy could come close to doubling his homer
total.

Top Candidate To Disappoint:   C Omir Santos’ solid hitting prompted the
Mets to trade Ramon Castro to the White Sox during last season. Now, with
Brian Schneider having signed with Philadelphia as a free agent and the Mets
having struck out in their pursuit of the free agent Bengie Molina, Santos
has been anointed as the favorite to claim the No. 1 catcher job. However,
the 28-year-old has only 291 at-bats in his major league career and may not
be capable of filling the void.

Authority Figures:   Manager Jerry Manuel, who took over for fired Willie
Randolph midway through the 2008 season, is now on the hot seat himself after
last year’s 92-loss season dropped his record to 125-130 at the Mets’ helm.
In the final guaranteed year of his deal, Manuel realizes there are no
shortage of potential replacements. They included former Diamondbacks and
Mariners manager Bob Melvin and former Astros and Angels manager Terry
Collins. Former Arizona third base coach Chip Hale and former Baltimore bench
coach Dave Jauss join the Mets in the same roles.

ROSTER REPORT

Although the Mets landed one of the market’s three top free agents, inking
LF Jason Bay to a four-year, $66 million deal, several holes remained
unfilled through free agency. The Mets did not land a No. 1 catcher, made no
notable additions to the rotation beyond signing RHP Josh Fogg to a minor
league deal and are banking on the additions of RHPs Kelvim Escobar and Ryota
Igarashi to shore up the bullpen.

在自由球員市場上最大條的三名球員中，Mets搶下了其中一位：左外野手 Jason Bay，以

Spring Focus:   Last year, the Mets came within a walk of tying the franchise
record for most free passes issued in a season (617 in 1999). So manager
Jerry Manuel has charged pitching coach Dan Warthen with having the pitchers
throw strikes during spring training.

Santana should have no ill effects from Sept. 1 surgery to remove bone chips
from his left elbow, but question marks litter the rest of the rotation.
Perez and Maine won 15 games apiece in 2007, but both had injury issues last
season and need to rediscover that prior form.

Nieve enters spring training as the favorite for the fifth-starter’s slot,
but he should be challenged by LHP Jon Niese, who is returning from a
hamstring tear, as well as RHPs Nelson Figueroa and Josh Fogg and LHP Pat
Misch.

Who can get the ball to K-Rod by successfully pitching in the eighth inning
is one unresolved issue. With RHP J.J. Putz departing as a free agent,
Escobar, Igarashi and Parnell will audition for the setup role. Escobar had
38 saves in 2002 with the Blue Jays, but he’s appeared in only one major
league game over the past two years because of a shoulder injury. Igarashi is
an unknown commodity after arriving from Japan with 54 saves in an 11-year
career. Parnell set a franchise rookie record with 68 appearances last
season, but he also had a 5.30 ERA.

預計牛棚成員：
雖然有 K-Rod關門，但誰能好好撐完第八局反成為目前無解的難題，J.J. Putz離隊後，
Escobar、 Igarashi和 Parnell都可能試試看。Escobar在2002年在藍鳥時有38次救援記

With CF Carlos Beltran sidelined perhaps into June following knee surgery,
the lineup takes a dramatic hit and is underwhelming from Nos. 5 through 8.
If Gary Matthews Jr. beats out Pagan for the starting role in Beltran’s
absence, Castillo or Murphy could slide to the No. 2 hole.

Bay will provide needed protection for Wright, who had only 10 homers last
season. But how much will Bay’s homer production slip in a dramatically less
hitter-friendly ballpark (Citi Field vs. Fenway Park) and with Murphy or
Francoeur offering modest protection behind him?

預計打線：
Carlos Beltran的膝蓋傷勢讓他大概得等到6月才回的來，這樣一來對打線造成重大打擊，
而且5到8棒的臉孔也實在難以激起球迷的熱情。若Gary Matthews Jr.表現夠好，則可

Matthews was acquired from the Angels, who are picking up $21.5 million of
the $23.5 million still owed to him through 2011. Blanco gives the Mets a
defensively capable backup behind the plate.

The righty-hitting Tatis could platoon with Daniel Murphy at first base, but
the ideal case would be for Murphy to have success against southpaws and be
an everyday player. With Cora entrenched as the backup middle infielder, one
bench slot remains until Beltran returns from the disabled list. That should
be a free-for-all. Catalanotto may be the best bet, but 1B/OF Chris Carter,
OF Jason Pridie, 1B/OF Nick Evans, 1B Mike Jacobs and C/INF Chris Coste could
be factors.

預計板凳球員：
從天使隊交易來Matthews，天使還必須負擔他2011年$23.5M 中的$21.5M，Blanco則將在
捕手這個位置上提供較佳的防守能力。

2007, he still needs time to develop defensively, but he could be a factor
this season. Ike Davis, the son of former major league pitcher Ron Davis, is
projected to be the Mets’ first baseman of the future. Ideally, however, he
spends the season at Class AAA Buffalo before using September as a
springboard for 2011. LHP Eric Niesen, a Wake Forest University product
drafted in the third round in 2007, will get a spring training look for a
bullpen role.
