For a team coming off back-to-back 100-loss seasons, the Nationals are
surprisingly upbeat heading to spring training.

roster additions this winter will make the difference between another
last-place finish in the NL East and a real shot at respectability.

concerted effort to add experienced, major league talent this winter.

He was successful on several fronts.

Rizzo managed to nab catcher Ivan Rodriguez, signing the future Hall of
Famer to a two-year, $6 million contract.

the 2009 All-Star break.

But upon returning in September, the 2007 first-round draft pick dazzled
and made a strong case for consideration this spring.

make the opening-day rotation as the No. 4 or No. 5 starter.

choice but to cut him loose before the end of camp so they’re not on the
hook for his full $1 million salary.

Authority Figures:

After guiding the Nationals to a 33-42 record as interim manager, Jim

to a two-year contract.

The 57-year-old skipper retained some of his staff, including pitching
coach Steve McCatty, hitting coach Rick Eckstein and third base coach
Pat Listach, but added a couple of close confidants: bench coach John
McLaren, first base coach Dan Radison and bullpen coach Jim Lett.

this year with another $3 million available in incentives.

He is not expected to be ready for the start of the season.

whom the Nationals claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks in November,
was designated for assignment by Washington to clear a 40-man roster spot

posting a 2.72 ERA in 61 appearances.

But after undergoing knee surgery, he struggled the next two seasons and
spent most of 2009 at Class AAA Reno.

the Reds last year.

to give him a shot.

If he makes the opening-day roster, he’d earn $600,000, with incentives
that could push the total value up to $1 million.

In order to do that, he’ll need to stay healthy and in the lineup, as
well as show he can be a more disciplined hitter and not chase pitches
as he has in the past.

September both at second base and in the outfield.

Though he’s still viewed by many in the organization as the long-term
answer at shortstop, Riggleman believes he could function nicely as a
role player.

The Nationals signed Batista to a minor league contract as insurance but
would prefer another of their young starters makes a strong enough case
to bump the veteran out of the rotation.

Detwiler will battle with RHPs Craig Stammen, Garrett Mock, Collin
Balester and J.D. Martinfor those available spots, with RHP Stephen
Strasburg waiting in the wings.

Burnett and Clippard each performed well when called upon during the second
half of 2009, and the Nationals sought to improve their left-handed options
by acquiring Guardado.

Storen, the 10th overall pick in the 2009 draft, has a shot to make the
club with a strong spring.

Otherwise, the Nationals feel good about their returning starters,
especially with the dynamic Morgan setting the table and a reliable
3-4-5 trio of Zimmerman, Dunn and Willingham driving in runs.

Bruntlett, added on a minor league contract, also possesses the
versatility to play multiple positions.

Morse hit well last season but is a liability in the field, while
Maxwell is defensively gifted but has yet to show he can consistently
hit big-league pitching.
