Inside Pitch:

The Blue Jays still haven't given up hope that Dustin McGowan, who missed all
of 2009 because of shoulder and knee surgery, will be ready by the start of
the season.
"It's too early to tell, but there is a scenario that he could (be with the
team opening day)," general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. "If he continues
to progress well, potentially he could work his way to being a starter for
us, but we have to see how he does, how deep he gets into (spring training)
games.

"But the opening-day date is not something that we've targeted specifically.
It's more when his arm is ready to go. We're not in a rush."

It's doubtful, though not impossible, that McGowan would be ready by the date
of the opener, April 5. A more realistic target would be April 14 at home
against the Chicago White Sox -- because of an off day in the opening series
against Texas, the Jays won't need a fifth starter until then. That way, he
could continue to throw in Florida and potentially get an additional two more
starts to build up arm strength.
"It certainly is (an option)," Anthopoulos said. "But we really don't want to
get ahead of ourselves."

was the Blue Jays' hottest hitter when they closed out 2009. Bautista clubbed
10 home runs in the final month of the season, and he hasn't let up this
spring. Through the opening week, Bautista went 9-for-14 (.643) with three
homers and six RBI hitting out of the leadoff spot. "I think it's just
getting ready on time, and that's allowed me to let my swing take over," he
said. "I worked a lot on that with Murph (hitting coach Dwayne Murphy) during
the second half of the season, and I tried to stick with that in the
offseason (winter ball) and it has just carried over."

believes he put himself behind the 8-ball in the competition for a spot in
the rotation by slicing his thumb while cutting up some chicken. That put him
more than a week behind the other starters. "Everybody's going to have one
more outing than I do," Cecil said. "How much that will affect me, I can't
really say until the end of camp. But it's definitely frustrating when
something this small (his thumb) sets you back for so long. Will it hurt me?
Maybe not. Probably not. But I've got to pitch well. I don't really have a
freebie right now because other guys have their starts and I might not be
able to have that one iffy kind of start." In his rookie season last year,
Cecil made 17 starts for the Jays and was 7-4 with a 5.30 ERA.

INF Mike McCoy

who is bidding for a backup infield spot, can play second base, shortstop and
third base, and he recently was used as a defensive replacement in center
field. He was signed by the Jays on the recommendation of bench coach Nick
Leyva. "He played for me in Mexico this winter (Culiacan)," Leyva said. "He
led off and hit second sometimes, but I just liked the way he played. He's a
little scrapper, but you look at his numbers and he steals 40 bases
everywhere he goes."

the big leagues can jump up and bite you in the (butt) and you need that guy
who has been through it and struggled. I've had my times where I've struggled
big-time. I like that challenge, and I want that challenge to be the guy they
can look toward for assistance if they need it."

closing in on opening a season on a major league roster. Ruiz can be a
right-handed DH, can pinch-hit and could spell Lyle Overbay at first base
against tough left-handers. "I like Ruiz. I believe if he plays every day he
can hit 20 to 25 home runs and drive in 85 runs," said manager Cito Gaston.

marked a turning of the page for the organization and set the Jays and

the hope that within a couple of years they can grow to the point where they
can compete in their division.

With no Roy Halladay, the rotation is the big question mark for the Jays.
They could have a lot of candidates coming and going throughout the season.
There will be a heated fight for at least two spots in the bullpen, which
figures to get a lot of use.

With Roy Halladay gone, the Jays are without a true ace and probably don't
have what most staff's would consider a solid No. 2, either. Someone has to
start opening day and that job should fall to Marcum, who is returning
following Tommy John surgery. Romero slumped in the second half last year but
is expected to be more polished this season. Morrow, obtained from Seattle,
is expected to be their No. 1 starter in 2011.
The bottom two spots should fall to two lefties—Rzepczynski and Cecil. Both
of them showed flashes while in the rotation last year.

Because of the loss of Roy Halladay and the youthfulness of the rotation,
manager Cito Gaston will be challenged to keep his bullpen from being
overtaxed and overused. Gregg was signed to be the closer, which frees up
Frasor and Downs for the seventh and eighth, spots where they perform best.
Tallet was used both as a starter and in long relief in '09 and will be
counted on to eat up a lot of innings out of the bullpen. The Jays have a
number of other bullpen options—RHP Scott Richmond, who was employed as a
starter last year; RHP Jeremy Accardo; and newcomers RHP Merkin Valdez, who
last year was with the Giants, and RHP Zech Zinicola, a Rule 5 draft pick
from the Cubs.

The Jays don't have a true leadoff hitter in their lineup, so the job falls
to Bautista. Just where Wells sits in the lineup is open to debate. Last year
he was expected to hit cleanup all season but, because of a nagging wrist
injury and ineffectiveness, he bounced all over the place.
The only set spots, according to manager Cito Gaston, are Hill batting third,
up a spot from '09. Gaston also wants Lind to bat fourth. Lind was not
comfortable batting there when asked last season.

Chavez hit .258 in a backup role last year. He also has a gun for an arm.
McDonald was re-signed and will see limited duty.
Gathright could give Vernon Wells a rest in center and play the corners as
well. He will give a station-to-station team some speed.
Gaston's bench offers little in the way of offense. Of the four, Gathright
will be the only player who will see more than the token amount of playing
time.
McCoy, claimed off waivers from the Rockies, should win the final roster spot
in a three-way battle with INF Jarrett Hoffpauir and DH/1B Randy Ruiz, who
hit .331 with 10 homers in 115 at-bats last year.

Top Rookies:

C J.P. Arencibia is slotted to open the season at Class AAA Las Vegas with
the hope that he can take over the No. 1 spot in 2011. A promotion to the
majors halfway through the season would not be unexpected.
RHP Kyle Drabek is one of the three top prospects the Jays acquired from
Philadelphia in the Roy Halladay trade. Although he is expected to open the
season at either Class A New Hampshire or Las Vegas, Drabek could move up the
ladder quickly. Last year in the Phillies system he was 12-3 with a 3.19 ERA.

throwing program but is not expected to return until around the All-Star
break. He was placed on the 60-day disabled list on Feb. 19.

RHP Dustin McGowan (right shoulder surgery in July 2008, right knee surgery
in July 2009) threw in a simulated game March 9. There is no timetable for
his return.

RHP Dirk Hayhurst (right shoulder surgery in February 2010) will be out four
to six months.

RHP Scott Richmond (right shoulder impingement) went on the 60-day disabled
list March 4. He was to embark on a throwing program.
