INSIDE PITCH

Kevin Hart seems to be losing ground in the competition against fellow
right-hander Daniel McCutchen for the one open spot in the Pirates rotation.

Kevin Hart看來好像在競爭rotation的最後一席上落後給Daniel McCutchen，

Hart drew raves from manager John Russell for how well he was throwing during
the early portion of spring training. However, Hart struggled mightily since
the exhibition games started, as he had given up seven runs in just three
innings in his first two starts, walking seven and allowing four hits.

他在春訓剛開始時的表現吸引了總教練 John Russell的讚賞，但是真的上了場後卻丟的
很辛苦；

McCutchen, meanwhile, had given up one run in four innings in his first two
outings of the Grapefruit League season. He allowed three hits and issued no
walks.

後者在前者大爆炸時相對的丟的還不錯。

“It’s still too early to look at it in the sense that we’re trying to pick
a guy,” Russell said. “It’s just a matter of keep running them out there for
 now. We’ll see where we’re at in a couple of weeks.”

McCutchen also pitched better for the Pirates last year during the regular
season. He went 1-2 with a 4.21 ERA in six starts after being called up on Aug.
 31 from Class AAA Indianapolis, where he won 13 games. Hart was 1-8 with a
6.92 ERA in 10 starts after being acquired from the Cubs in a trade on July 30.

McCutchen去年底從3A被called up上來後成績普普，但是Hart從小熊轉來後的成績卻是慘

Hart has made a number of mechanical adjustments with his throwing motion
this spring. He believes those adjustments are working despite his poor
Grapefruit League statistics.

所以Hart在春訓時調整了一些投球機制，雖然說實際上的成績不堪入目，但他仍相信這些
修正是對他蠻有幫助的。

“I feel good and under control,” Hart said. “I feel like I’m taking steps
forward, both stuff-wise and pitch-wise. I feel better, a whole lot more
confident.”

‧ RHP Octavio Dotel was expected to start throwing live batting practice
March 15. He had yet to pitch in an exhibition game because of a strained
muscle in his left ribcage. While the Pirates feel Dotel might still have
enough time to begin the season on the active roster, the chances of him
starting on the disabled list keep growing. The Pirates signed Dotel as a free
 agent in January to serve as their closer this season.

Dotel 3/15將會模擬投球，他因為左胸拉傷還沒上過場。球隊預期這位表定的closer有一
半的機會趕得上開季。

‧ RHP Joel Hanrahan had yet to throw off a mound this spring as of March 12,
and he acknowledged that he would begin the season on the disabled list. He
reported to spring training with a strained pronator flexor in his elbow.
Hanrahan had increased his throwing program to the point where he was playing
catch at 105 feet, and he should be on the active roster by no later than the
end of April if he continues to progress in his rehabilitation program.

Joel Hanrahan由於手肘肌肉拉傷到現在也是還沒上過投手丘，看來開季得在DL裡了。理
論上會在四月底去小聯盟投復健賽。

‧ OF Brandon Jones returned to action after missing the first week of
exhibition games with soreness in his right knee. Claimed off waivers from
Atlanta in the offseason, Jones is in the running to win a bench job.

Brandon Jones這位從勇士隊撿來的外野手正在爭取當球隊的替補，他的右膝已經不酸了

‧ RF Garrett Jones hit a home run and a double off Yankees LHP CC Sabathia
in an exhibition game, which has to be considered an encouraging sign. Though
 Jones hit 21 home runs in 82 games as a rookie last season, he struggled
against lefties, batting .208 in 101 at-bats.

Garrett Jones這位老二年級生從沙胖手中尻了兩發長打，看起來是個好現象，因為他去
年儘管打得好，但是對左投的數據實在不好看。

‧ OF Andrew McCutchen says he plans to run more this season. McCutchen was
successful on 22 of 27 stolen base attempts last season as a rookie.

exhibition season, putting him in prime position to win a long-relief job.

ROSTER REPORT

The Pirates signed five free agents this winter, the most notable being RHP
Octavio Dotel, who will be the closer. The others are expected to serve in
complementary roles: LHP Javier Lopez, RHP Brendan Donnelly, INF Bobby Crosby
and OF Ryan Church.

今年季後球隊簽了5位FA，其中直得一提的就是前面提到的Dotel，剩下的也都是來補球隊
缺的位置。

Spring Focus:   Manager John Russell wants to use spring training as a
bonding experience after the Pirates made seven trades last June and July. The
 Pirates have a fairly settled team considering they lost 99 games last season.
The most notable

spring competition will be between RHPs Kevin Hart and Daniel McCutchen for
the fifth starter’s spot. Jeff Clement will try to make the conversion from
catcher to first baseman, and if that fails, then RF Garrett Jones would shift
 to first and Ryan Church likely would move in as the starting right fielder.

總教練打算利用春訓好好調整一下陣容，因為去年季中球隊做了7次交易。最值得注意的
就是剛開始提到的第5號先發的競爭，還有來前水手的prospect Jeff Clement要移防一壘
(如果練不起來的話只好把Garrett Jones拉近來然後補Ryan Church了)。

Duke and Maholm are the two veterans in a young rotation, though Duke is just
26 and Maholm is 27. They would be back-end starters on many clubs with their
middling stuff, but they will be asked to lead this staff.

Zack Duke和Paul Maholm雖然年紀輕輕，但在rotation裡已經算老鳥了，儘管他們在別隊
只能當後段先發，但在這裡蜀中無大將，只好廖化做先鋒。

The hard-throwing Ohlendorf took a major step forward in the second half of
last season, and he will look to build on that success. Morton has the best
pure stuff of any starter, and the Pirates feel this could be his breakout
season. Hart has impressed manager John Russell with how well he is throwing
this spring after changing his pitching mechanics over the winter, and he rates
 the edge over RHP Daniel McCutchen for the fifth starter’s job.

Ohlendorf去年球季後半段表現突出，看起來今年也蠻ok的。
Charlie Morton的資質看起來是裡面最好的，被球團評估今年是他的breakout season。

Dotel still has the power arm to rack up the strikeouts at 36, but his
increasing walk total is a concern, especially in moving from a middle-relief
role with the White Sox to closer. Donnelly gives the Pirates a veteran setup
presence and backup closer while allowing the hard-throwing Hanrahan, Meek and
 Hart more time to develop in lower-leverage situations.

Dotel老雖老仍然很會K，不過他的BB也是值得關注一下的。
馬林魚來的Donnelly應該會擔任setup以及備位closer，讓Hanrahan、Evan Meek及Hart(
如果輸掉先發位置的話)能在低張力的局面下慢慢投出自信。

Lopez figures to be the left-handed specialist, and he had three good years
with Boston from 2006-08 until imploding early last season and spending the
summer at Class AAA Pawtucket. The rubber-armed Carrasco can work in a variety
 of roles, including as the long man.

Lopez預計是一人左，他06到08年在紅襪也扮演相同的角色。

McCutchen was dazzling as a rookie last season and should continue his march
toward becoming a dynamic leadoff hitter, Gold Glove-caliber fielder and
franchise cornerstone. Iwamura was acquired from Tampa Bay to solidify the
infield defense and also provide a second speed player at the top of the lineup
.

Jones hit a team-leading 21 home runs in 358 at-bats last season as a
28-year-old rookie, but he will have to show that he was more than a one-year
wonder. Doumit is a switch hitter with power, particularly from the left side,
 but his ability to stay healthy is always a concern. The Pirates have high
hopes of Clement developing into a power hitter, but he was considered a bust
in Seattle.

Milledge dispelled questions about his attitude and work ethic after being
acquired from Washington last season, and he seems ready to live up to his vast
 potential. LaRoche had a strong finish in 2009, but top prospect Pedro Alvarez
 will be playing third base at Class AAA Indianapolis and waiting to take his
place. Cedeno showed flashes of being a potentially above-average player after
 being acquired from the Mariners last year. He had a big winter-ball season in
 his native Venezuela.

Lastings Milledge從國民隊轉來後改善了他的態度以及專注力問題，可能能發揮他的潛

LaRoche弟09年底強力反彈，但是球隊的top prospect Pedro Alvarez已經上到3A，搞不

Jaramillo was solid behind the plate as a rookie last season, but he isn’t
much of a hitter. Crosby will try to resurrect his career after spending seven
 seasons in Oakland. He can play all four infield spots as well as the outfield
 corners.

Vazquez’s limited range makes him an iffy proposition in the field,
particularly at shortstop, and he primarily will be used as a left-handed pinch
 hitter. Church is an insurance policy in the event Clement fizzles in spring
training, as he would likely become the starting right fielder with Jones shift
ing to first base. Young failed to seize the starting second base job after
Freddy Sanchez was traded to San Francisco last July, but he is a good
right-handed bench bat.

Jason Jaramillo這位菜鳥去年坐陣本壘板的表現，證明了他不是只會打擊而已。
運動家來的Bobby Crosby必須要挽救他下滑的生涯，在球隊應該是當工具人。

Top Rookies:   RHP Ramon Aguero blossomed after being moved to a relief role
early last season, his fastball topping out at 98 mph when used in short stints
. He posted a combined 3.86 ERA in 84 innings with low Class A West Virginia,
high Class A Lynchburg and Class AA Altoona. The Pirates love hard throwers, so
 the 25-year-old could win a job with a big spring. OF John Raynor was selected
 in the Rule 5 draft from Florida after hitting .257 with six home runs, 36
RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 123 games with Class AAA New Orleans. The Pirates
like the 26-year-old’s speed and defensive ability. He could beat out Delwyn
Young for the fifth outfield job.

火球男Ramon Aguero去年被轉到後援後看起來績效不錯，如果春訓成績好看點有機會上大
聯盟。
規則5撿來的外野手John Raynor有速度及防守，應該可以擊敗Young成為球隊的5號外野。

Medical Watch:

‧ RHP Octavio Dotel (strained muscle in left rib cage) threw a bullpen
session March 9 and reported no problems. He remained optimistic about being
ready for the start of the season.

‧ RHP Joel Hanrahan (strained right elbow) was shut down at the start of
spring training. He is expected to start the season on the disabled list.

‧ RHP Craig Hansen (nerve problem in neck) was slowed at the beginning of
spring training. He should be able to pitch at some point this season.

Craig Hansen因為脖子神經問題進度落後，不過應該可以在季中上場。

‧ RHP Jose Ascanio (arthroscopic right shoulder surgery in October 2009)
likely will be out until June.

Jose Ascanio因為右肩關節手術要到7月才能上場。

‧ INF Ramon Vazquez (microfracture right knee surgery in November 2009) is
expected to be ready for the start of the season.

Vazquez去年右膝顯微手術應該趕得上開季。

‧ RHP Tyler Yates (Tommy John elbow surgery in July 2009) likely will be
ready to pitch in games sometime in July.
