In Carl Pavano's mind, image rehabilitation will come exclusively
through appearances on the mound. No other part of his personality
needs to change.
The perennially injured right-hander held a telephone news
conference Friday, set up by the Yankees in hopes of warding off
the media scrutiny that awaits him in spring training.
在Carl Pavano的心裡，在投手丘上復活的演出形象將完全地到來。

While saying he is healthy and on track, Pavano - who last pitched
in the major leagues on June 27, 2005 - disagreed with the notion
that he needs to do any additional damage control in the Yankees'
clubhouse.
"I've had a lot of interaction with my teammates,"
said Pavano, 31, who added that he hasn't spoken with
Joe Torre this winter.
"I probably have a good enough relationship with my teammates that ...
I don't feel I need to do anything like [a proactive apology]."
當說到他是健康且可以達到預期目標的話題時，

His teammates might disagree. On Tuesday,
Mike Mussina said, "He's got to earn some trust from some players
again, from a coaching staff and a manager and an organization."

"I welcome any thoughts like that, especially from my teammates,

At the urging of his new agent, Gregg Clifton,
Pavano spent much of the offseason at Fischer Sports,
a highly regarded academy that has helped such pro athletes
as former Yankee Randy Johnson and American League Most Valuable
Player Justin Morneau. Pavano said he focused on "a lot of flexibility
stuff," working primarily on his back,
and that he felt much better as a result.
He already has thrown off a mound three times.

But it's more than his back that needs repair.His surliness and
apathy have been well noted around the clubhouse, and his
constant teases - pitching in rehabilitation starts, only to come
up with new injuries - have left nearly everyone skeptical.

Pavano violated Torre's rule of not taking golf clubs on the road
in 2005; the rule is so important to the manager that even
Roger Clemens observed it. On the day of his first Yankees start
in 2005, club officials saw Pavano scolding his mother for wearing
a Yankees "NY" logo painted on her cheek. According to witnesses in
Yankee Stadium's executive lobby, he told her,
"You're embarrassing me."

When the New York tabloids mocked Pavano for trying to cover up
his car accident last year, devising back-page headlines such as
"Crash Test Dummy," Pavano's teammates used those back pages to
wallpaper his Yankee Stadium locker.
(Clifton said he hopes to meet with general manager Brian Cashman
early in spring training to discuss potential discipline regarding
Pavano's tardiness in reporting the accident.)
當去年紐約的小報報導Pavano試圖隱匿發生車禍事故時，
以封底標題嘲笑其為「撞擊實驗假人」，Pavano的隊友還以這篇封底報導當壁紙

Nevertheless, Pavano said, "I don't think I rubbed anyone the wrong
way. It's just the action of not being on the field." His teammates
will be the judge of that.
