Braves pitchers—and some position players—reported to Turner Field on Feb.
1 for the annual early throwing program. Manager Bobby Cox had already been
hanging out in his office preparing for the season, which he has already
announced will be his last.

Cox would have preferred to play the season without the announcement, simply

What he is looking forward to is seeing the continued development of
right-handers Jair Jurrjens and Tommy Hanson and outfielder
Jason Heyward. There’s a better than even shot that he’ll get to see
Heyward on his roster on opening day.

the team heads to camp. But Cox’s biggest immediate decision is who among
the phalanx of pitchers will make up the bullpen. Beyond closers Billy
Wagner and Takashi Saito, closer-in-waiting Peter Moylan
and situational lefty Eric O’Flaherty, the most intriguing story line
of the season could be the development of Kris Medlen, who has done
everything from starting to closing. Cox will choose two more arms from a
small army of candidates.

The rotation is set—Jurrjens, Derek Lowe, Tim Hudson, Hanson,
Kenshin Kawakami—if not the order of appearance. But as Cox points
out, “It doesn’t matter, really. They’re all going to get the same amount
of starts. Last year we had JJ in the two-hole, (Javier) Vazquez behind him.
Both of them excelled. We’ve got choices.”

The lineup is also pretty much set, assuming that center fielder Nate
McLouth is able to refrain from trying to hit with power and will just
put the ball in play. But McLouth’s transition from power hitter is nothing
compared to what awaits Troy Glaus, who is moving across the diamond
from third base to first base. The lineup hinges on his ability to keep up
his hitting while adapting to a new position, because he is penciled in at
the cleanup position, between third baseman Chipper Jones and catcher
Brian McCann.

Cox, by the way, does not consider whether Jones will regain his hitting form
to be a serious question: “He’ll hit. He’s a lifetime .310. He’ll hit. He
’s gonna hit. There’s no doubt in my mind.”

The effectiveness of the lower part of the order depends on whether shortstop
Yunel Escobar continues the leap in offensive development he made last
season; he blossomed once Cox moved him into the fifth or sixth positions.

McCann will bat fifth due to Glaus’ arrival. McCann was great batting
fourth, but when he wasn’t in the lineup every fifth day—because that’s
how Cox keeps his starting catcher fresh over a long season—his absence got
the rest of the order out of whack. The Braves have plenty of hitters who can
bat fifth, including outfielder Matt Diaz, who, it is hoped, will
continue the strides he made at the plate last season, once he became an
everyday player.

Top Candidate To Surprise:   1B Troy Glaus says a groundball is a groundball,
whether he fields it as the All-Star third baseman he has been, or as the
newly minted first baseman the Braves are turning him into. Glaus will have
three challenges in his new position: reading the ball off the bat in a way
opposite of what he has always done, getting the footwork down on double
plays, and adjusting to the strength of the throws from SS Yunel Escobar.

Top Candidate To Disappoint:   The offense. In particular, OF Melky
Cabrera, who comes to the Braves with the deck stacked against him,
because he is the most recognizable name acquired in the trade of RHP Javier
Vazquez. He’ll be hard-pressed to perform well enough to off-set the
loss of last season’s ace.

from 1983-85. Cox is hoping he can get through his final season as a major
league manager without receiving any rocking chairs in opposing stadiums.

His role will include helping GM Frank Wren and Cox, and occasional
broadcasting. Glavine, 43, spent his first 16 big-league seasons with
Atlanta, then pitched for the Mets for five years before returning to the
Braves in 2008.

Manager Bobby Cox still thinks the Braves could have been the wild-card team
last season, if not the NL East division winners. They were right in it. “
Then,” he says, “along came Lee.” Meaning the Phillies’ acquisition of
LHP Cliff Lee.“Well,” Cox said brightly, “at least they don’t have both of them!”
Lee is gone, but the Phillies now have RHP Roy Halladay(notes).

Jurrjens has been the Braves’ No. 2 starter since his rookie season two
years ago. His stuff and makeup make him the team’s de facto No. 1 going
into the season, but Lowe will likely be the opening-day starter, to make up
for the fact he was shopped around in the offseason. The Braves will keep a
close watch on Hudson as he continues his comeback from 2008 Tommy John
surgery.

Wagner and Saito were signed to be this season’s version of last season’s
interchangeable closers, LHP Mike Gonzalez and RHP Rafael Soriano. Being
older, though, and given Cox’s penchant for pulling his starters after seven
innings, Wagner and Saito cannot be expected to pitch four consecutive days.
Consider Moylan the closer-in-waiting.

Cox could tinker with the leadoff spot, but he probably won’t in spring
training. If McLouth doesn’t work out, the change can take place in May.
Inserting Glaus in the cleanup spot allows McCann to drop to fifth, where his
scheduled absences will cause less upheaval, and inserts a right-handed bat
between McCann and Jones. The Braves’ bats alternate left and right from top
to bottom.

who can play all three outfield positions, the ideal reserve. Not exactly the
blockbuster outcome one wanted from trading last year’s ace RHP Javier
Vazquez. Heyward could well make the opening-day roster. The only question is
whether the Braves want to weigh him down with those expectations.

Top Rookies:   OF Jason Heyward, 20, one of the game’s top prospects, will
be with the Braves this season. The only question is whether his major league
career will begin on opening day. He spent time at all three levels of the
minors last year: 49 games at Class A, 47 at Class AA and three at Class AAA,
accumulating a .323 batting average and a .963 on-base-plus-slugging
percentage. 1B Freddie Freeman, 20, may have the luxury, if you want to call
it that, of spending the whole season at Class AAA Gwinnett. It depends on
how well Troy Glaus masters first base. Freeman split time last season
between Class A (70 games) and Class AA (41), then played in the Arizona Fall
League, where he batted .267 with 12 hits and five RBIs. As soon as his
hitting improves the least little bit, he could move up to the Braves,
because his defense is nearly good enough already.

His entire staff returns, and that consistency from the top continues to keep
the Braves in the postseason hunt season after season: bench coach Chino
Cadahia, pitching coach Roger McDowell, hitting coach Terry Pendleton, first
base coach Glenn Hubbard, third base coach Brian Snitker and bullpen coach
Eddie Perez. All of them are no doubt wondering whether every day will be an
audition for the Braves’ managerial job.
