Whether it succeeds or fails, there’s no question agent Scott Boras’
campaign to land his client, outfielder Johnny Damon, in Detroit was
clever.
From the outset, the Tigers discouraged any suggestion they were
interested in a player whom the New York Yankees snubbed
(after he snubbed them).
Why would they need another set of 36-year-old legs in their outfield?
They already had one, right fielder Magglio Ordonez, and another who
was working hard at it, left fielder Carlos Guillen.
But Boras kept looking at prospective Detroit batting orders.

What gets overlooked is that Damon is 36, not 31. He wouldn’t be unsigned
if he didn’t have flaws.
He was moved out of center field because he cannot cover the ground on a
consistent basis anymore. Then there’s that weak left arm.
His spike in home run totals was largely seen as the result of playing in
new Yankee Stadium.
If Damon doesn’t come on board, there is Ryan Raburn, whose excellent
power numbers in limited playing time were prompting manager Jim Leyland
to try to find more ways to get him in the lineup.

out the pen and paper, then worry about the consequences later.

Much of his success is predicated on his slider, which he throws at two
different speeds, because it sets up his fastball.
The slider was mostly absent last season, leading to a loss of confidence
and control and a fall from the rotation early in the season.

All-Star break, so he has to break the bad habits he fell into after
a successful first half.
In the last year of his contract, Inge will have to do something he’s
had problems with during his career—resist the temptation to pull
everything and return to hitting up the middle and to right-center to
be the lineup force the club needs him to be.

pitching. “Their confidence means a lot to me,” Sizemore said.
“It’s a big pat on the back. It’s special because it does not happen
a lot. That makes me push even more with my rehab to get back.”
He is expected to able to play in exhibition games right away after
recovering from a broken left ankle suffered last fall.

as fast as he can. In spring training, I don’t want to have any
interruptions.” According to Phoenix Municipal Court records, Gerald
Laird was cited for assault (touching with intent to injure).
Brandon Laird was cited for disorderly contact (fighting).
Laird, 30, threw out 42 percent of would-be basestealers in 2009,
tops in the majors, but hit just .225 with four home runs and 33 RBI
in a career-high 135 games.

Rabelo was signed to a minor league contract by Detroit, his original
organization, after spending the last two years with the Florida Marlins.
He spent the entire 2007 season with the Tigers and hit .256 in 51 games.
Traded to Florida, the switch-hitting Rabelo played 34 games for the
Marlins in 2008 and hit .202 before being sent to the minors, where he
spent all of last season.

He batted .250 in 31 games for the Tigers last season.
He can play in both the infield and outfield, and he showed pinch-hitting
skills in his two stints with the Tigers.
Originally drafted and signed by Detroit, Kelly was allowed to go to
Pittsburgh as a six-year minor league free agent in 2007 but returned
to the Tigers before last season.

Detroit’s second game, April 7 at Kansas City, won’t be carried by Fox
Sports Detroit because the cable network is already committed to
televising Pistons and Red Wings games scheduled for the same evening
time period.
“It is our goal to provide coverage of all three of our teams’ games
on April 7 to create a great tripleheader of Detroit sports,” Greg
Hammaren, senior vice president/general manager of FSD, said in a
released statement.
“We’ll know in the coming weeks if that will be possible.”

The pitching staff was remade by the winter dealing of CF Curtis
Granderson and RHP Edwin Jackson.
That meant Detroit’s major problem entering the spring was beefing up
an anemic offense.
The subtraction of Granderson and 2B Placido Polanco (free agent departee)
hurt a lineup that already was weak with them in the 1-2 spots.
Comebacks by aging stars RF Magglio Ordonez (lots of singles, not enough
doubles or homers) and LF/DH Carlos Guillen (sore right shoulder) are
essential to the team’s success.

A surplus of lefties in the bullpen can be solved temporarily by stashing
one or two in the minors, but how/whether LHPs Nate Robertson and Dontrelle
Willis fit in will be a spring-long drama—both have big guaranteed money
but little results over the last couple of seasons.
Finding a way to generate more offense will be a background story line.

The first three spots are set, and the Tigers believe they have enough
left if Bonderman can’t get his fastball up to snuff and Galarraga, who
fell off sharply last season, can’t parlay a hot winter season into a
return to his 13-win form of 2008.
If those two falter, the need for a lefty in the rotation opens the door
for Nate Robertson, Dontrelle Willis and possibly Phil Coke, tentatively
assigned to the bullpen for now.
Veteran RHP Eddie Bonine could earn a spot on the staff, but rookie
RHP Alfredo Figaro needs to work on developing an off-speed pitch in
the minors.

Strong springs by Ni and Schlereth could lead to trading Seay, an
impending free agent.
LHP Brad Thomas signed a major league contract coming off two seasons in
Korea.
If he shows anything in the spring, it could mean both Ni and Schlereth
get optioned out.

The Tigers are placing a lot of faith that he can.
Sizemore won’t replicate the departed 2B Placido Polanco’s Gold Glove,
but the Tigers think he will give them close to the same offensive
production.

majors rather than have him polish his defensive skills by playing full
time in Class AAA, in which case non-roster invitee Diaz opens the season
in Toledo.
