The Rockies will enter spring training with a justifiable air of confidence,
coming off a franchise-record 92-win season and a spot in the playoffs as the
NL wild card. They had a quiet winter by design, because they didn’t have
many holes to fill.

Francis threw well in a minicamp in the Dominican Republic and is likely to

The only other thing to be decided will be the final two spots in the

relief.

Top Candidate To Surprise:   LHP Greg Smith was never really right last year,
when he worked a mere 49 1/3 innings in the minors. He twice got sick in
spring training and then opened the season on the disabled list with shoulder
inflammation and later dealt with back spasms. Smith, 26, pitched 190 1/3
innings for the A’s as a rookie in 2008, and after that season was traded
along with RHP Huston Street and OF Carlos Gonzalez for LF Matt Holliday. The
Rockies will go to camp with five starters ahead of Smith, but now that he’s
healthy, a good spring is possible.

Top Candidate To Disappoint:   C Paul Lo Duca who turns 38 on April 12 and
didn’t play last year, signed a minor league contract. He played for manager
Jim Tracy in Los Angeles, and that familiarity helped Lo Duca land with the
Rockies. Even though he can play first base, it’s hard to see Lo Duca, whose
last decent year was 2007, sticking with the Rockies. The team finished its
winter business by signing Melvin Mora, who like Lo Duca bats right-handed,
but he fills a definite need in that he can play third base, where the
Rockies need a backup for Ian Stewart. With Chris Iannetta and Miguel Olivo
ahead of him at catcher and no clear spot for him on the Rockies bench, Lo
Duca’s chances of making the opening-day roster seem slim. Barring an injury
to one of the catchers or Mora, Lo Duca would need a terrific spring to even
merit consideration for a roster spot. With his career in decline, that’s
not likely to happen.

Authority Figures:   Jim Tracy was named National League Manager of the Year
by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America after the Rockies went 74-42
(.638) following the firing of Clint Hurdle. Tracy has a very good rapport
with the players, who admire his adroit handling of the bullpen and his
minimal presence in the clubhouse. A year ago, Tracy took over an 18-28 team
and guided it into the postseason as the wild-card team. This year will be
different, since the Rockies enter the season with lofty internal and
external expectations. Tracy, who seems ideally suited to meet that
challenge, has brought back his entire coaching staff: bench coach Tom
Runnells, pitching coach Bob Apodaca, hitting coach Don Baylor, third base
coach Rich Dauer, first base coach Glenallen Hill and bullpen coach Jim
Wright.

Year. Closer Huston Street won the Good Guy Award for his professionalism and
cooperation with the media.

Street, who converted 35 of 37 save opportunities during the regular season,

starting pitcher. Fowler hit .266 with 29 doubles, four homers, 34 RBIs and
27 stolen bases.

LHP Jeff Francis, letting free agent C Yorvit Torrealba go after he
overplayed his hand and bringing in C Miguel Olivo, not tendering 3B Garrett
Atkins a contract and signing Melvin Mora to back up Ian Stewart at that
position and bolster the bench. Coming off a franchise-record 92 wins in
2009, the Rockies, who are heading into their 18th season, have enough
experience and talent to win their first division title.

Spring Focus:   The Rockies need to determine whether LHP Jeff Francis is
ready to begin the regular season after shoulder surgery forced him to miss
all of 2009. They have to finalize their bullpen, which could mean RHP Manuel
Corpas or RHP Matt Daley begins the season at Class AAA. Chris Iannetta will
have to show in spring training that he rather than recently signed Miguel
Olivo should be the front-line catcher.

than the typical fifth starter and has an upside.

The back end is very solid with Street, who converted 35 of 37 save
opportunities last year, and Betancourt, who sets up Street in the eighth
inning. Morales found his niche last year when moving to relief, a role that
is better suited to keeping his mechanics and his focus in line.

RHP Manuel Corpas, whose elbow trouble sidelined him in late July, could

bullpen mainstay in 2008, is expected to be fully recovered from Tommy John
surgery and return around the All-Star break.

Manager Jim Tracy could flip-flop Gonzalez and Fowler or move Barmes up,
possibly back to the No. 2 spot, if he cuts down on his 121 strikeouts and
miserable .294 on-base percentage. Improvement from Iannetta and Stewart is
crucial to making this lineup click, along with Hawpe avoiding another
second-half plunge like last year’s. If he can avoid another wretched April,
Tulowitzki could hit 35 homers and drive in 120 runs. Helton’s power has
declined, but he still gets on base 40 percent of the time and hits a lot of
doubles. The lineup has good left-right balance, but overall, the Rockies
have to put the ball in play more often this year and be more competitive
against lefties.

The Rockies figure to get more offense than in years past from a bench that
includes Giambi and Mora, both accomplished veterans. Giambi’s presence
means either he or Smith, both left-handed hitters, can be used earlier, and
manager Jim Tracy will have the other for the late innings. The
right-handed-hitting Mora can also play second base and the corner-outfield
positions and can spell left-handed-hitting 3B Ian Stewart if his troubles
against lefties carry over from 2009. The right-handed Spilborghs can play
all three outfield positions, and the Rockies hope he’ll again punish
lefties, as he did prior to 2009.

Top Rookies:   RHP Jhoulys Chacin, 22, got a taste of the big leagues last
year, going 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in two stints that totaled nine games, one
start. The first stint came when Chacin jumped from Class AA Tulsa, where he
went 8-6 with a 3.14 ERA in 18 games. He was demoted from the Rockies to
Class AAA Colorado Springs, where he went 1-2 with a 3.77 ERA in four starts
before being recalled in September. Fastball command and an excellent
changeup are Chacin’s strengths, and after a rough first stint with the
Rockies, Chacin fared better the second time by relying more on his four-seam
fastball and less on his two-seam sinking fastball. Chacin is expected to
begin 2010 at Colorado Springs, where he could put himself in line for a
promotion during the season.

RHP Esmil Rogers, 24, went 8-2 with a 2.48 ERA at Tulsa, earning a promotion

strikeouts in 60 2/3 innings. Rogers regained his fastball command in the
Dominican winter league. With a 93-94 mph fastball, Rogers, a converted

Medical Watch:

‧ LHP Jeff Francis (left shoulder surgery in February 2009) didn’t pitch
last season. He’s healthy and throwing but must show in spring training that
he can, first, compete without any restrictions and, second, be ready for the
grind of the regular season.
‧ RHP Manuel Corpas (right elbow surgery in July 2009) developed a staph
infection after having bone chips removed from his elbow. Corpas pitched in
the Dominican winter league, where his velocity was good but not his control.
He’ll compete for a spot in the bullpen, but he has minor league options
remaining.
‧ RHP Taylor Buchholz (Tommy John elbow surgery in June 2009) is expected to
be ready to return around the All-Star break.
