[情報] Phillies sign veteran 2B Giles

BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT (TICKER) —The Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday signed
veteran second baseman Marcus Giles to a minor league contract and invited him
to spring training, according to a report by ESPN.com.

Giles will provide the defending World Series champions with some insurance
should Chase Utley not be ready for the beginning of the season after
undergoing hip surgery.

Giles would make $600,000 if he earns a spot on the Opening Day roster,
according to the report.

The 30-year-old Giles did not play in the major leagues in 2008, getting
released by the Colorado Rockies prior to the start of the season. He spent
2007 with the San Diego Padres, batting .229 with four home runs and 39 RBI
in 119 games.

Giles had his best seasons with the Atlanta Braves, batting .285 with a .361
on-base percentage from 2003-06.
