(Crazy For You) Madonna landed her first mainstream movie role as a
vampish nightclub singer in "Vision Quest". Vision Quest starred Matthew
Modine as a young wrestler who falls in love with sultry Linda Fiorention.
The movie was a flop but this single released from the film was a massive
success. So much so that when the film was released in in Europe, it was
renamed Crazy For You. The single went straight to No.1 in the charts,
knocking USA for Africa's charity hit "We are the World" off the top spot.
(We Are The World) Sorry Dionne, Lionel, Kenny, Diana and Stevie.... Crazy
For You was such a big hit that they released another single from "Vision
Quest".
(Gambler) Gambler was another musical hit for Madonna but she'd only
played a bit part in the movie. She still needed that all important
starring role. In 1985, she got it.
(Into the Groove) This single came from the film "Desperately Seeking
Susan. In the movie, Madonna starred as an eccentric, maneating conwoman
in trouble with the law. The movie was a big success pulling in $27.3
million dollars at the box office, making it the fifth highest grossing
film in 1985. Co-star Rosanna Arquette was reportedly furious that Madonna
stole the show and got all the media attention. Rosanna shouldn't have got
so jealous... After all, top band Toto had a hit that very same year with
a song inspired by her lovely self. (Rosanna, Toto) Lucky old Rosanna.
Meanwhile, Madonna had been building up her media profile both in the
movies and in her romantic life.
(Live to Tell) On 16 august 1985, Madonna married movie star Sean Penn.
The couple had already caused quite a stir in the press for their wild
behaviour. Sean was known for his aggressive outbursts against overly
intrusive reporters. So much so, the media dubbed the romantic couple the
Poison Penns. On their wedding day, news crews made an uninvited
appearance by showing up in a helicopter. So Sean stuck his head up
Madonna's dress while she gave them the finger. rock'n'roll guys. This
single was the first realease from Madonna's new LP, True Blue. It was
taken from the movie "At Close Range" which starres Sean. Live to Tell was
a number one hit. The movie wasn't.
(Papa Don't Preach) Papa Don't Preach was the second single release from
True Blue. This cinematic style video starred top Hollywood actor Danny
Aiello famous for starring roles in blockbusters like "Once Upon a Time in
America" and "Moonstruck". In this video Madonna played a pregnant
teenager seeking sympathy and approval from her father. It caused a great
deal of controversy in America as pro-abortion groups claimed that Madonna
was irresponsibly encouraging pregnant teenagers to have their children.
Meanwhile, anti-abortionists saw a great opportunity and wanted Madonna to
speak out against abortion. Madonna didn't get involved. She said that she
intended the song to be a celebration of life, not a national controversy.
Despite all this, Papa Don't Preach hit the top of the charts in 1986.
(True Blue) The title track from True Blue was far from controversial.
The video and the lyrics paid homage to the innocent sounds of the 50's
do-wop music, reinforcing good old American values - like bubble gum
chewing girlies in ski pants talking about their true loves. How sweet.
True to form though, Madonna couldn't stay too sweet for too long.
(Open Your Heart) While the lyrics to Open Your Heart suggest an innocent
love song, there's nothing innocent about this video directed by
contorversial French photographer Jean Baptiste Mondino. Top fashion
designer Jean-Paul Gaultier designed Madonna's new sexy costume. The
ogling little boy was played by Felix Howard whose fashion model mother
got him introduced to Madonna in 1986. Unfortunately for Felix, he didn't
get to perform the song live with Madonna as he couldn't get a work
license. According to one biographer he burst into tears when he heard the
disappointing news. However, he was later consoled when he showed up again
in a video for a song produced by his heroine.
(Each time you break my heart, Nick Kamen) Allegedly much to the chagrin
of newly wed husband Sean Penn, Madonna helped heartthrob Nick Kamen
launch his music career. This single topped the UK charts - the first
ever UK No.1 produced by a woman. Girl Power.
(La Isla Bonita) This was the last single released from True Blue. It was
the first video to feature Madonna with a Latin-American look, something
she would exploit even more in later years. True Blue was Madonna's
biggest selling album to date, amassing 12 million sales worldwide and
hitting No.1 in 28 countries. The Guiness Book of Records called it
"totally unprecedented". Madonna had now firmly established herself as the
most successful female artist of the 1980s. She was soon to become the
most controversial.
