Ahh, remember the days when a trip to Leeds cacophonous little bearpit was a soc
cering delight to savour? No more alas as the Yorkshire whites begin their inexp
lorable plummet towards Division One. A glance at the Leeds United squad list is
not so much a who's-who, more a who's-he? Zoumana Camara?, Didier Domi? Roque J
unior? Lamine Sakho? Salomon Olembe? Cyril Chapuis?
Many pundits talked of Chelsea's potential problems in settling in so many new p
layers but Leeds are in a similar situation, except instead of world famous star
s they have bought, or rather loaned, well, pardon my foul language, a load of o
ld shite. I foresee Leeds will lose their Premiership place this season, they ar
e beginning to resemble the dishevelled corpse of their once proud Yorkshire riv
als Sheffield Wednesday.
With an increasingly hopeless looking manager, wafer thin squad and so many rats
ready to jump the sinking, rotting, Elland Road ghost ship, the one-time Champi
ons League semi-finalists are a club in terminal decline. Add to that the pressu
re of fans who expect far too much and you've a fabulous recipe for catastrophe.
Last season when Rio had a grim return to his old club, Leeds performed well abo
ve their abilities to grind out a 1-0 win. This season the fighting spirit of ol
d has all but vanished as sad monkey-faced Peter Reid fails to motivate his ragg
ety bunch of mercenary journeymen. But as motley a crew as they are, Leeds fans
will demand the eleven men put up a fight. Howevery with only one win all season
(at time of writing) I prophesise the quality of the red Champions from across
the Pennines will prove too much. Its sweet revenge for last season's horror sho
w methinks.
