30th November: Away vs Chelsea
It seems we have waiting last to challenge the magnificent Abramovich experiment
head on. A mad experiment based upon the premise of attempting to buy every top
player in known world. I will be the first to admit I scoffed at such a megloma
nical scheme but I'll eat some humble hairy pie and admit the West Londoners hav
e done rather well in blending together their mish-mash of top-shelf talent. Its
impossible to know what line-up Claudio "The Tinkerman" Ranieri will put out ea
ch game, (I suspect he makes it up by rolling dice) but then never before in the
history of British football has a man had so much choice of so many players.
The signing of Mutu has been by far the best of the bunch I think you'll agree.
Crespo has not been quite so potent but is a world class striker and a lethal th
reat in any situation. Lampard has grown into a midfield engine and alongside Ma
kelele they have a powerful central pairing. Then there's Jimmy Floyd Hasselbain
k, Eidur Gudjohnsen, Geremi, Damian Duff, Jesper Gronjkaer....last and probably
least, there's Juan Seba Veron. Ranieri is having problems fitting in the bald m
isfit just as Fergie did, for the lurid temptation is always there to shape the
team around the Argentinian. But is he worth such a re-shape-age? Nae sir, I sus
pect the bald headed one's best days are behind him and I would fully expect Mr
Keane and Mr Butt to have no trouble handling him in this encounter.
The Champions will desperately need their top players on form: Ruud, Giggs, Kean
o and Scholes (if fit) can't afford to have a quiet game on this day. Sadly I se
nse the foul smell of defeat wafting up from the Kings Road. If Chelsea want to
win the league then this is the game they'll need to get stuck into too and I pr
ophesise they'll do just that. They were unlucky at Highbury in the last big lea
gue showdown and although United have a phenomenal record historically at the Br
idge down the years, I dread it will not save us from defeat. Damn.
Difficulty factor 9/10 - Tough as old boots
