Ferdinand faces FA probe
The Football Association (FA) will meet with Rio Ferdinand on Monday to
discuss his missed drugs test.
The defender, who claims he forgot about the test as he was moving house on
23 September, did eventually take - and pass - a test 36 hours later but that
will not have any bearing on his interview or any subsequent disciplinary
hearing.
Under doping guidelines in other sports, failure to provide a specimen on the
day requested can lead to a two-year ban but FA regulations are unclear.
He is sure to be charged following the interview but the exact nature of the
charge will determine the severity of his punishment if found guilty.
Under the misconduct category he could either be charged with failure to
attend an anti-doping test or wilful failure to attend an anti-doping test.
The second charge would carry a definite ban and to be proved needs evidence
of a deliberate attempt to avoid the drug testers.
The FA will also look at claims made about the Ferdinand affair, particularly
those made by Gordon Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers
Association (PFA).
FA marketing and communications director Paul Barber said: "A lot has been
said and written and as you would expect the FA will be conducting a thorough
review of all the issues including an analysis of what was said by whom and
when.
"Clearly, the FA would expect any unsubstantiated or inaccurate statements
made about its handling of a very difficult issue to be corrected by those
concerned at the earliest possible opportunity."
Taylor accused the FA of effectively allowing Ferdinand's name to be released
into the public domain, of "pre-judging" the case and of flouting their own
procedures.
Taylor will attend Ferdinand's interview as a PFA representative but he fears
the player's case has been compromised by all the publicity.
Meanwhile Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted Ferdinand
was at fault.
"Rio made a mistake in not having his test when he should, but it was an
innocent error. He just forgot," Ferguson said.
