Ferdinand Helps Launch 'Reading Stars' 5/5/04 2:55 PM Rio Helps Launch New Reading Initiative Rio Ferdinand is among a host of Premiership footballers to help launch a new national initiative aimed at encouraging families to read together. Set in local libraries, Premier League Reading Stars sees top players such as Ferdinand, Sol Campbell and David James encourage football fans to read their favourite books. The programme is a partnership between the Football Foundation, the National Literacy Trust and the Premier League, and is supported by Arts Council England. Each club has nominated a Reading Champion, who has selected his favourite book to create a 'Reading Stars' book list. The clubs have adopted nearly 40 local libraries. Reading groups, made up of children and adults, meet at the libraries on a regular basis to talk about their heroes’ recommendations. Children taking part in the scheme will be able to select free books to keep and there are incentives provided by the clubs for participants, such as ground tours and match tickets. Piloted in 2003, the scheme was highly successful; 90% of the children taking part said it had made them want to read more. Dave Richards, chairman of the Premier League and the Football Foundation, said: “Through schemes like Premier League Reading Stars, football is using the interest and passion generated by the game to raise educational standards. “By encouraging people to read and go to their public libraries, footballers can show the positive role that they can play in society.” Neil McClelland, director of the National Literacy Trust, added: “Research has indicated that children growing up in a home with books and parents who read are more likely to read themselves and have stronger literacy skills. "An innovative scheme like Premier League Reading Stars is powerful because it uses a passion for football to introduce reading for pleasure as an acceptable and fun family activity.” READING STARS BOOK LIST(足球明星推薦大家看的書) Some of the Premiership stars on the book list: ‧ RIO FERDINAND (MANCHESTER UNITED) The BFG, Roald Dahl (The BFG: The Big Friendly Giant http://tinyurl.com/2eh48) ‧ SOL CAMPBELL (ARSENAL) Beowolf: Dragonslayer, Rosemary Sutcliff ‧ LEE CLARK (FULHAM) Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, JK Rowling ‧ LES FERDINAND (LEICESTER) Long Walk to Freedom, Nelson Mandela ‧ DAVID JAMES (MAN CITY) The Hobbit, JRR Tolkien ‧ COLIN COOPER (MIDDLESBROUGH) 1984, George Orwell ‧ LINVOY PRIMUS (PORTSMOUTH) The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, CS Lewis ‧ MATT MURRAY (WOLVES) Keane: The Autobiography, Roy Keane & Eamon Dunphy Published by Ben Hibbs. -- Good choice Rio & Les Ferdinand, Matt Murray, Colin Cooper & Linvoy Primus!!! -- -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.112.216.120
