It has been revealed that Manchester United wanted to bring in current Real Val
ladolid coach Fernando Vasquez as Sir Alex Ferguson's number two when Carlos Qu
eiroz left Old Trafford last summer.
Vasquez has now confirmed that he was contacted by the Red Devils to become the
Portuguese coach's possible successor, but ultimately opted to take over Valla
dolid.
"It's true that Manchester United called me," stated the 48-year-old.
"They asked me for some information and told me I was on a list of candidates t
o enter into the coaching staff to replace Queiroz.
"Manchester United are a big club that work very well with players.
"It was a very attractive job."
Vasquez has gathered extensive experience coaching Oviedo, Las Palmas, Rayo Val
lecano, and now Valladolid, in the Spanish top-flight - as well as Lalin, Racin
g Club de Ferrol, Lugo and Compostela in the lower leagues - and is a highly-re
spected coach in Spain.
He has repeatedly worked miracles on very limited resources, and is renowned fo
r being a student of the tactical side of the game.
United have failed to make a big-name appointment to step into Queiroz's shoes,
and instead promoted internally by bringing in Mike Phelan to assist Ferguson.
