Fergie's targets: Who'll replace Becks?


Speculation is mounting over who Sir Alex Ferguson will sign to replace David
Beckham if, as expected, the England captain is sold in the summer.

Ferguson left Beckham on the bench for arguably Manchester United's biggest
game of the season, against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

And the reigning European champions are expected to bid for the 27-year-old
midfielder, giving Ferguson a sizeable transfer budget.

The United boss is likely to use the proceeds from Beckham's sale to finance
a major rebuilding of his team.

Juventus' Czech midfielder Pavel Nedved is Ferguson's top target, according
to the Guardian. 

They believe a ￡20 million bid should land Ferguson his long-term target,
who can play all over the midfield and inspired the bianconeri to a 2-1 win in
Barcelona on Tuesday.

The Independent expect a bid for 'the new Figo', Portuguese winger Ricardo
Queresma, who is currently playing for Sporting Lisbon.

But PSV Eindhoven's quick Danish winger Dennis Rommedahl is the man The Mirror
expect to see on the right flank at Old Trafford last year. 

Brazilian World Cup winner Ronaldinho is thought to be another target of
Ferguson's, though the Paris Saint-Germain star is thought to prefer a move
to Spain or Italy. 

The Beckham cash could be used to establish an all-Dutch strike force at Old
Trafford, if The Sun are to be believed. They expect Barcelona's Patrick
Kluivert to join Ruud van Nistelrooy in attack for United next year.

West Ham's young striker Jermain Defoe is a more likely target, though,
according to the Daily Star. 

Meanwhile, the papers are in agreement that Damien Duff and Harry Kewell are
Ferguson's two targets to replace Ryan Giggs, with the Beckham deal again
helping to finance summer moves. 

And Fabien Barthez's error in Real Madrid's first goal could have sealed his
fate at Old Trafford, with the Mirror and the Guardian suggesting Paul Robinson
will become the latest to make the controversial move from Leeds to Manchester
United.
