Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has offered an insight into why David Beckham no longer figured in his plans for the club. The reason seems to be that Fergie felt the player's pop-star wife, Victoria, had turned him into a "different person."

Ferguson has said In an interview with Sports Illustrated magazine, published in New York, that Beckham was a dedicated, hard-working professional during his early years at Old Trafford.

But he believes the midfielder became distracted after meeting his future wife and that the show-business lifestyle might have altered his attitude towards football.

"He was blessed with great stamina, the best of all the players I've had here," said Ferguson. "After training, he'd always be practising, practising, practising. But his life changed when he met his wife. She's in pop and David got another image. He's developed this 'fashion thing'. I saw his transition to a different person."

Ferguson added that "so long as it doesn't affect his football it doesn't bother me". The evidence suggests, however, that Beckham's lifestyle increasingly annoyed Fergie.

Despite the carefully orchestrated release of statements from each man expressing admiration and gratitude for the other following the announcement of the Real Madrid deal, that is seen purely as a public relations device. In reality the pair were barely on speaking terms by the time Beckham the transfer was concluded.

There has never been a great deal of love lost between Ferguson and Victoria 'Posh Spice' Beckham.

She has previously made little secret of the fact that they rarely, if ever, speak, even at official club functions.

And Ferguson has been distinctly unimpressed that Posh has often spoken of her desire to move abroad, and for her husband to play for a big continental club.

Their promotional tours to Los Angeles and Asia this summer, when he expects his players to be resting ahead of the new season, are the sort of 'distractions' that infuriated Ferguson.
