Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says he is amazed people wrote off
his title-winning side.
Ferguson was speaking after seeing his side win their eighth Premiership
title in 11 years, courtesy of Leeds United's 3-2 win away to Arsenal.
At one point, Arsenal headed their rivals by eight points, but Sunday's
defeat leaves them trailing United by the same margin with only two games
left to play.
"We had to overcome injuries early in the season but we had to bite the
bullet and take the poison," said Ferguson.
"I was surprised people had their doubts - I knew we would have our main
players back for the main part of the season.
"I never doubt United. I know (the players') capabilities. When you are with
a group for a long time you know them."
And Ferguson wasted no time in setting his side their next goal - bringing
the Champions League back to Old Trafford.
"Now we have to get the big one again," said the Scot, whose side suffered a
6-5 aggregate loss to Real Madrid in this season's quarter-finals.
"Winning it twice is not enough. We are not far away, believe me.
"Everyone was excited by the Real Madrid adventure and we want it again.
"It has become as important as anything you can think of in football."
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was defiant despite watching his side concede the
title which they won in thrilling style last season.
"There was a very small difference between the two teams," said the Frenchman.
"I think overall, if you look at the FA Cup and the championship, we are
certainly the best. But in the championship United found their form at the
right moment."
