Swiss Investor Buys Stake in Manchester United, Telegraph Says

London, Feb. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Manchester United Plc, the U.K.'s biggest soccer
club, is on ``full bid alert'' after an investor bought more than 2 million
pounds ($3.4 million) of shares through the Geneva-based arm of an internatio
nal bank, the Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported, without citing anyone.
The report comes after the Daily Telegraph, the sister newspaper of the Sunday
Telegraph, yesterday said that Dermot Desmond, Ireland's third-richest man, has
acquired a stake in Manchester United. Desmond is a friend of Sir Alex Fergu
son, the team's head coach.
There has been mounting speculation in recent months that a bidder would
emerge for the club, the Telegraph said. Manchester United's lawyers have been
working through the list of shareholders in an attempt to identify the
beneficial ownership of a number of shareholdings, the newspaper said.
Manchester United executives are concerned Desmond will amass more stakes
through agreements with other investors and mount a takeover of the company,
the report said.
Manchester United shares have risen 9.5 percent this year, valuing the club
at 299 million pounds.
