United Suffer Heinze Injury Heartache

United have been dealt a huge injury blow with news that Gabriel Heinze
will miss the majority of the season after damaging cruciate knee ligaments.
The Argentine defender, who picked up the injury after landing awkwardly
in the midweek draw with Villarreal, left United's training ground
on crutches on Friday.
Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It's not good news. Gabi will be out
for most of the season. It's a bad blow.
"It seemed like such an innocuous incident. He went up for the ball
and landed awkwardly. Normally in that situation it turns out to be
nothing serious, but this is disappointing news."
His team-mate, Rio Ferdinand, was equally appreciative of the loss of
a crucial component to a defence that has conceded just one goal this season.
"It's a massive blow," Ferdinand said. "He's been an integral part of
the team and a fantastic addition to the defence.
"It's not just on the field, where he is 100 per cent committed
all the time, off the field he has been great as well."
United now travel to Anfield on Sunday without three key figures,
Gary Neville (groin), Roy Keane (hamstring) and Heinze.
The 27-year-old left-back is part of a growing list out injured for the Reds.
Quinton Fortune (knee), Wes Brown (thigh), Louis Saha (knee)
and long-term injury victim Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (knee)
are also all unavailable for selection.
"It seems to be in defence where we are picking up these injuries,"
Sir Alex added. "We have four players that play in defensive position
out injured. That is a concern for us. I hope that situation starts to
improve over the next few weeks."
Ferguson is likely to handing Heinze's place to Kieran Richardson on Sunday.
The 20-year-old, who can play at left-back though his favoured position
is in midfield, filled in at left back on Wednesday night at El Madrigal.
"Kieran will be more involved," the United boss said.
"He provides a different option for us as an attacking full-back.
"He acquitted himself very well against Villarrreal.
Every question that was asked of him he answered very well with a great,
positive attitude."
"Villarreal tried a number of players on the right wing to have a go
at Kieran but he came through it all with flying colours.
I was very pleased with him."
The Greenwich-born former West Ham trainee benefited hugely from
a loan spell with West Bromwich Albion last season.
His performances helped keep the Midlands club in the Premiership,
and he returned to United in the summer a better player.
"Kieran has done fantastically well for us," Sir Alex said.
"He's come on so much in the last 12 months.
The move to West Brom on loan has turned out to be a real bonus to us.
He's come back a man.
"Even though Kieran is still only 20 years of age,
he is showing great maturity in his play."
Ferdinand added: "Not having Gabi is a huge blow to the team,
but it's an opening for Kieran. It's a chance for him to come in
and show everyone what he can do."
